Show Review: Jean Paul Gaultier Spring 2013
By Faith

Throughout his long and illustrious career, some of the world’s biggest musicians have worn Jean Paul Gaultier’s designs. He paid them back on his Spring 2013 runway, dressing the models as world-renowned music icons from Sade to Michael Jackson. The pieces were quite functional,  despite most being a part of costume and you can thank Monsieur Gaultier later: he just presented the entire fashion industry with ways to dress up for Halloween which is just a month away.

All black menswear-inspired looks paired with dark lipstick were odes to Grace Jones, while the Material Girl herself was channeled through sky-high ponytails and bondage-inspired designs. Jumpsuits and playsuits had a moment in all of the collection’s “scenes” from a long-sleeve wide leg number with a plunging v-neckline on Shena Moulton to a strapless printed piece that perfectly captures Spring’s signature brights and eye-catching patterns.

There were a number of wearable separates on display including the perfect trench, a sleeveless blazer and trousers shown on Ajak Deng that will fit into your workwear wardrobe seamlessly, and a slew of great blazers: some even equipped with sheer sleeves for a bit of sensuality.

The outrageous? Well of course, there was that as well. I mean, what were the ’80s but a decade for unbelievable fashion?

To finish the collection, men magically appeared in scantily-clad looks. Your guess as to why they were there is as good as mine, but I cannot say that my eyes were upset at their presence, except that they were walking in sky-high boots better than I do.

Leave it to Gaultier to remind us all that fashion is indeed about having fun! Let’s face it: sometimes this industry can get pretty stuffy and self-righteous and it is amazing to see a designer just let loose and make a collection that feels good. It is also a true testament to his talent that he was able to craft ’80s pop star costumes out of functional clothing.

What do you think?

  1. I actually really love this show Jean Paul Gaultier had fun with it and the designs came out amazing! I know it’s hard to be original in the fashion industry and no one has ever done music inspiration.
