What do you get when you combine an all-black cast of models, Michael Jackson’s costumes, and showstopping headgear? Well, Philip Treacy’s Spring 2013 collection! Dedicated to late fashion icons including Jackson, Isabella Blow and Alexander McQueen, the high-octane show was full of glamour, emotion, and some of the most amazing accessories I have ever seen.
Treacy secured the costumes from MJ’s estate and they served as the foundation for the looks, including his notorious embellished band jackets that always seemed more embellished and out of this world with each new tour. Ataui Deng strutted the catwalk in a gold metal turban, while Jourdan Dunn sported a gold circular dome: equal parts home décor and Star Wars headpiece.
Some of my favorite looks in the collection were the leather jackets and pants: nods to every video from Billie Jean to Beat It. No one wore leather like Michael! The corresponding headpieces were also out of this world, including Joan Smalls’s beautiful face being hidden under an oversize smiley face.
This will undoubtedly go down as one of the coolest Spring 2013 shows. As you can see from the designs, so many have been influenced by Michael Jackson’s tour and costume designs including 3.1 Phillip Lim, Balmain, and more. Though functionality can’t even be mentioned here, it is inspiring to see a collection that presents art instead of wearable pieces, especially one which is dedicated to three of fashion’s biggest icons.
What do you think?
