Norma Kamali has always been able to successfully straddle the line between being fashion-forward and still holding onto her brand’s signature aesthetic. For Spring 2013, she reworked some of her tried and true styles, while incorporating new and interesting materials like handmade Brazilian fishing nets which she used to create the beautiful dress that you see above. This season was all about functionality: no eye-searing shades or “who would wear that?” silhouettes. The color palette was relatively neutral with a splash of summer brights, perfect for adding her designs into your wardrobe seamlessly.
A retro-inspired jumpsuit and romper were clearly a nod to the past and Kamali played with peplum a bit on embellished blouses and a sleeveless zip-front hooded top, which was her sole foray into the sporty vibe which she is known for. More looks of yesteryear were presented including knee-length dresses fit for a stylish garden party, an 80′s style snakeskin suit which Jennifer Lopez might be able to pull off with the right accoutrements and a bit of tailoring, and a head-to-toe denim look which I would have expected to see on an Isabel Marant runway, but is still pretty cool.
My favorite pieces in the collection were the red carpet-ready dresses. From an allover dot print to a sheer white gown crafted from that aforementioned Brazilian fishing net fabric, the designs definitely made a lasting impresssion. I wonder if fans like Rihanna and Khloe Kardashian will be bold enough to try them.
What do you think?
