If you thought supermodel Joan Smalls just happened upon her illustrious career by chance, think again. Motivated to become a top model since the age of 13, the Puerto Rican beauty competed in pageants, sought out agencies, and even fixed her teeth to ensure she got that #1 spot.

See her tell a bit about her tale to W Magazine and Lynn Hirschberg:
A few nuggets I just love:
*When she lost her first beauty competition, she reflects, “Sometimes losers…end up winners.”
*Though designers sometime want her to wear pieces she doesn’t like, she realizes her job is to sell, sell, sell. “I have to take my opinion out of the way and just do my job, do it right, and make everyone believe that I love this,” she says, “And I’m gonna show you that down the runway.”
*And though she has scoliosis, she says, “Sometimes I do things that most people that have a straight back wouldn’t be able to do. So I just think it comes from an individual perspective of how far you wanna go in your career…sometimes you have to bite the bullet.”
No excuses, y’all. Makes me like her even more!

Joan really is a warrior. She has a strong self confidence that she didn’t need next to her a reach or famous guy to success. She is my # 1 model.
