When most think of a crocodile tote or python evening bag, they automatically think that the creation of these pieces is endangering the species from which the exotic skin comes from, but this is not always the case. One of the designers who is leading the charge in the sustainable use sector of the luxury goods industry is Colombian-born Adriana Castro. Her designs are not only beautiful, but also benefit the people and wildlife of Colombia as a part of the population program of the caiman species, under the supervision of the Colombian Ministry of Natural Resources and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.
Her Fall 2012 collection captures some of the season’s biggest trends including colorblocking and rich Autumn-perfect textures, with crocodile, natural viper, and python skins of course.
Castro captures the burgeoning mochila bag trend and also shines a light on artisans from her own Colombia with a clutch boasting a Wayuu Indian pattern and trimmed in cobalt croc.
Not to fret, there are some pared-down styles for the more practical luxury lover: sleek envelope clutches in taupe python, evening-perfect designs in antique gold croc, a black eel crossbody bag for everyday wear, and top handle satchels for those who like the classics.
