Aside from celebrity dressing, Prabal Gurung has become known for his bold use of color, eye-catching prints, and modern silhouettes. For Resort 2013, he pulled inspiration from the reclaimed wood sculptures of artist Aaron Moran: equal parts primordial art and space-age meteors. The influence could be seen in his architecturally-inspired designs: skirted bottom tops layered over flared pants and v-neck dresses and tops revealing long side panels cleverly hiding front pleats and even hot pants.
Moran’s work really came to life in the geometric prints in the collection. A white shift dress with elbow-length sleeves seemed to be an almost exact sartorial reincarnation of one of his sculptures.
Peplum anyone? The ladylike detail is back for Resort and Mr. Gurung gave it to us in every way possible.
Naturally, the red carpet-ready dresses and gowns were of utmost importance. Who will be the first to wear one from this collection? Everyone from Zoe Saldana to Kerry Washington is a fan of the brand and would look stunning in the season’s electrifying designs.
Last, but not least were the shoes: another collaboration with Nicholas Kirkwood.
This is such a strong collection from Prabal Gurung and he has quickly become one of my favorite designers because he makes clothes that are simultaneously functional and charming. Though bold and bright, you never get the feeling that his designs are wearing the woman, but that they are enhanced by the personality and style of the lucky lady who slips them on. He also gives such a robust offering from office-appropriate trousers to cut-out cocktail dresses: if you’re fortunate enough to have disposable wardrobe income, you could easily line your whole closet with his pieces and never grow bored. Oh and the shoes…magical.
What do you think?
