What you can always expect from Max Mara is a steadfast dedication to form and function with luxurious textures and some of the best tailoring in the industry. The Fall 2012 collection fell right in line with the brand’s strengths in a neutral palette, holding onto the traditions of the season. Designer Laura Lusuardi took inspiration from the 1982 film Querelle, about a French sailor who arrives in Brest, France and his sexual escapades thereafter. That influence was a blatant one throughout the looks as the whole collection touched upon classic marinière style, with a sensual and feminine twist of course.
The collection was characterized by just a few shades: black, olive, camel and oyster with a smattering of prints thrown in for good measure. The black pieces were all about function and classic design and outerwear and menswear-inspired separates were the immediate focus including roomy, voluminous coats, crocodile-embossed trench coats, suiting and suspenders. The olive looks lightened it up a bit but and turned on the real style and luxury factors with fluid silk jersey pants, double-face cashmere jumpsuits, long military-inspired coats and mixed media sweaters and tops crafted from wool and the aforementioned crocodile-embossed leather.
Camel revealed the true artistry of the collection, while injecting it with a dose of femininity with a high-waist leather pencil skirt, a jumpsuit boasting oversized lapels and a plunging neckline, curve-hugging shirt and sheath dresses and so much more.
Oyster ushered in the sensuality with silk wrap dresses, fur sleeves and a blouse-short combination that would work everywhere from vacation to the red carpet.
Milan Fashion Week is certainly starting off strong! This collection from Max Mara is an example of how a brand can stay true to its aesthetic, yet add different influences in for a twist each season. These looks aren’t overtly embellished or generous with the amount of skin shown, but they still make their wearers look beautiful and polished. I loved the accessories from the caps to the leather spats and I think this collection will be huge for retail because it’s just that impeccably tailored and wearable.
