Hot on the heels of her British Fashion Council Fashion Forward sponsorship, Louise Gray presents a Fall 2012 collection that is quintessentially Louise, featuring bustling abstract prints in a wide spectrum of colors. This season had a bit of a gritty punk rock feel, evidenced by the multi-hued inverted mohawks donned by the models. But these are the most joyful punk rockers we’ve seen.
Louise Gray’s brand is synonymous with rebellion, and she never fails to bring that element to each of her collections. Shattered geometric shapes are unapologetically printed on each piece, and layered with another busily printed item.
Gripe at her gratuitous use of color and pattern all you like, but the quality of Gray’s execution is undeniably impeccable. The youthful, petulant mood of her prints are complemented by grown-up, painstakingly tailored jackets, trousers, and frocks.
With the exception of a sheer bauble-ornamented onesie, Gray’s silhouettes are mostly quite classic. Indeed, the only way such madly printed clothes could work is if the tailoring is on point. From straight shift dresses, to beautifully structured silken jackets, Gray showcases her extraordianry construction abilities.
Styling aside, I’d say these pieces are quite wearable. I assume most women wouldn’t dare wear these looks together, but individually, these pieces look great. I will also be interested to see how Gray’s brand develops under her newly-won mentorship. I love her use of print and color, but I feel this is a great time in her career to evolve, and give us something a little different. We’ll see what happens next season!
