Show Review: Norma Kamali Fall 2012
By Faith

Norma Kamali has become a pioneer in the fashion industry for bridging the gap between technology, style and online shopping. She has given us all avant garde pieces to covet from metallic cutout swimsuits to sexy form-fitting dresses, but for Fall 2012, Kamali took us back to the late 1930′s with a collection that screamed old Hollywood glamour with a modern twist. From bodycon turtleneck dresses boasting diamond cutouts to one-shoulder dresses given retro flair with larger than life turbans, this season was all about the modern woman who has an appreciation and love for vintage fashions.

Kamali played with prints including polka dots, Fall-perfect plaid, a retro-inspired diamond pattern and a custom print, featuring a slew of words pertaining to the brand including “energy”, “Omo Gym” and “passion” among others.

Jewels made a statement, adding shimmer and sparkle to a number of styles as the trim on dresses and turbans, as well as adorning the necklines of a turtleneck dress and jumpsuit with oversized leather pockets, for looks that were both retro and modern simultaneously.

The most showstopping pieces in the collection were the furs: oversized and shaggy. Kamali even used fur to colorblock, with a long black and white scarf and a red, black and white jacket that was both chic and zany.

This was a fun and statement-making collection in true Norma Kamali fashion. With 45 years in the fashion industry under her belt, it is amazing to see how creative and innovative her collections are each season and that is why the most stylish the world over continue to rock her designs. You know that Rihanna will be wearing this collection and I also expect Beyoncé to be seen in these pieces as the brand is a favorite of hers for editorial and videos.

What do you think of Norma Kamali’s new collection?

The fashion statement uttered by the industry, “one minute you’re in and the next you’re out…” does not apply to Norma. Before all the ornate embellishments of Versace or statement pearls of Channel….Norma stood for all things futuristic. I’m soo happy I grew up with her fashion. A totally different era, the 70s and 80s really made you excited for fahsion. If I were an adult back then I could totally give up sex and get my kicks off what was in style for that time.

I really like a lot of the pieces. Just when I thought the turban trend was on it’s way out, I just fell in love with it all over again.
