Rachel Comey is a designer known for whimsy and eccentric prints, but for Fall 2012 she presented a more serious and somber collection, playing with Fall’s signatures: neutrals and textures. Though her off-beat and lighthearted sensibility was still present, this season she opted for a look that was much sharper and more sophisticated, giving Comey a chance to broaden her fanbase. The collection placed functionality first and play second. Separates had a strong presence in the collection, allowing the Rachel Comey woman to mix and match while looking effortless. Perforated cotton tops, chunky neutral knits, high-waisted trousers, pops of metallic: less is more this season and simplicity rules. The black dress was a cornerstone in easy and fluid silhouettes. These were not the conventional LBDs that most designers feature in their collections but instead black midi dresses: falling at or below the calf. Definitely a minimalist moment and one that we have not seen from Rachel Comey before. Not to fear: the collection wasn’t completely devoid of colors and prints. Watercolor dresses had their time in the spotlight: for the loyal Rachel Comey fan who lives and breathes on flirty design. There was also a standout piece of outerwear: a tangerine coat that seemed to be lifted straight off of the set of Mad Men. Surely for the fashion enthusiast who likes to mix vintage with her new season buys. Though I missed Rachel Comey’s eccentricity, I liked her choice of functional silhouettes. The lack of color was not a shocker: it is Fall after all where neutrals and dark color palettes reign supreme. Save for a few nods to the past, the collection was totally modern. Jessica Alba is a fan so I cannot wait to see if she gravitates toward this collection and which looks she fancies.
What do you think of the collection?
