    Best of 2011: Final Results

    by Claire

So the votes have been cast for our fabulous Best of 2011 series!
Let’s take a look at who rocked each category:

    1. Fashionista of the Year.

    Solange Knowles

The songstress, DJ, and all around fly stylista captured 40% of your votes, and 100% of your hearts. Bella said, “SOLANGE! She is versatile and makes her style look so effortless.”

Valerie added, “SOLANGE without a doubt!! She absolutely dominated in terms of being effortlessly chic this year. Confident, edgy, elegant, etc. – she has embraced every trend and even brought back trends that weren’t even relevant until she rocked it. ” Agreed!

    2. Most Fashionable Man.

    Kanye West

Was there ever any doubt? For the third year in a row, the Louis Vuitton don has snagged our most fashionable male title.

The man takes risks that work, and isn’t afraid to step outside the sartorial box. From prints to kilts, blouses to button ups, he has an eye for style. Kudos, Kanye, Kudos.

    3. Beauty Diva of the Year.

    Rihanna

We may not have taken to all her fashion choices this year, but our Bajan babe still holds it down in the beauty department.

She can wear her hair curly, crimped, or straight; long, short, or mid length; red, brown, or blonde….and still look flawless. And her makeup? Girl….

Sure, it doesn’t hurt that she’s cute as a button. But mainly we adore her beauty game because she tries new, bold things that are still relatable enough to spark trends, inspire movements, and mobilize Rihanna navies.

    4. Model of the Year

    Joan Smalls

There’s no denying that Joan Smalls had the best year ever.

    Gucci Fall 2011

She’s dazzled and inspired houses from Gucci to Chanel, and walked every catwalk from Givenchy to Balmain to Louis Vuitton.

    Work, bish!

    5. Fashion Bombshell of the Year.

    Olori Swank from Atlanta

It was a tough choice for many of you, but Olori Swank from the A yanked the title of our Bombshell of the Year.

Liz commented, “Loving Olori Swank’s overall style. From head to toe she is killin it!!!”

Caramel Mimi added, “I would rock all of Olori’s fits! Luvs it!”

    6. Fashion Bomber of the Year.

    Kaine from Texas

Our Texas Bomber won in a landslide, securing a whopping 55% of your votes.

Most of you liked his simple sophistication and tailored looks. Kloset Lover gushed, “Kaine…he’s classic and class cannot be bought nor taught! His look will look good 25 years from now.”

    7. Outfit of the Year

    Rihanna in BCBG Max Azria

The all white ensemble Rihanna chose for the 2011 Billboard awards was fresh, sophisticated, and simple. From her hair down to her nude Louboutins, Rih exuded effortless chic.

Hair, makeup, divalicious stare? Check, check, and check.

    Fierce!

What do you think? Do you agree with the final results?

Reminisce on our end of the year recaps at www.fashionbombdaily.com/category/best-of-2011.

Mail Bombs: Sheree Whitfield’s Louis Vuitton x Edun Monogram Revelation Keepall 45 Handbag, Beyonce’s Party Video Brian Lichtenberg Leggings, and Last Minute New Year’s Wardrobe Queries!

    by Claire

    Woooot!
It’s our last Mail Bombs post of 2011!
I’m getting ready to go get my nails done, hair done, everything did for the New Year’s Eve party I’m co-hosting tomorrow (did you get your tix?!?).
At any rate, let’s tackle these Mail Bombs!
First up, Joey says, “I have been looking all over trying to find the name of the Louis Vuitton handbag that Sheree Whitfield from Real Housewives of Atlanta is wearing.”

“Thank you and have a Happy New Years.”
You too! Well, everybody knows Sheree Whitfield has expensive taste, so she stepped out on the social circuit in this $5,000 limited edition Louis Vuitton x Edun Monogram Revelation Keepall 45:

The bag was originally a runway piece from Louis Vuitton’s Fall/Winter 2009 Menswear collection. In 2010 they re-released the bag in collaboration with Edun in a rich brown color inspired by Africa. The Revelation Keepall comes with a Masai bag charm hand-crafted in Kenya by Made, a fair-trade fashion accessory company which provides employment and promotes ethical trade in Africa. Only 1500 were made, so the bag is sold out…but you can find other Louis Vuitton products at www.louisvuitton.com.

Nickey says, “My birthday is coming up and I’m looking for something a lil edgy like Beyonce’s black look in her Party video (it’s the black jacket and black leggings towards end of video).”

“… I’ve searched online ALL OVER. I am specifically looking for these black slit leggings or something similar.”
Yep! Reader Sun.kissed tipped us off, pointing us in the direction of Beyonce’s $172 Brian Lichtenberg Blindsided Leggings:

If $172 is too much for you, get a similar slit look with these:

    More Promiscuous…
    ShopStyle

Whitney screams, “COULD YOU PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME FIND OUT WHERE I COULD BUY THIS YSL PIN (OR SOMETHING VERY VERY SIMILAR) THAT JUSTIN BIEBER WORE ON HIS BLAZER.”

“… I FELL IN LOVE WITH IT THE SECOND I SAW HIM WEAR IT TO THE MTV AWARDS THIS SUMMER.THIS WOULD BE ABSOLUTELY GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!!”
Justin is most likely wearing a vintage piece, so your best bet is to patrol Ebay. Seller Jeremy8mn claims to be selling this authentic pin for $100:

We also found this Big Cartel site selling the pin for $140. With all unverified, independent sellers, however, simply use your best judgment. Read feedback, check their return policy, and pay via Paypal in case you end up buying a fake!

Next, Cici says, “I saw the stage play What My Husband Doesn’t Know on BET last weekend. Michelle Williams wore this outfit in it.”

“… I can’t find any pants like this anywhere. Do you know where I can find them or something like them?”
Not sure of the exact pants Michelle is wearing, though you can try these for a similar look:

    More P.A.R.O.S.H….
    ShopStyle

Robyn writes, “Where can I find this style of sweater that Chrissy has on?”

Yep! Slip on any of these asymmetrical, cozy knits:

    More Helmut Lang…
    ShopStyle

Lastly, we had a couple last minute New Year’s Eve Wardrobe questions!
Shani says, “I bought this fab pencil sequin skirt from ASOS.”

“… I love it and want to wear it for NYE, but I have no top. I can never think straight when I do things last minute. Do you have any suggestions?”
Of course if you want to go for safe, a top in gold or black would work fabulously. But since we’re bringing colorblocking into 2012, why not jazz up your skirt with a purple, pink, or jeweled colored top? The skirt looks to be both high waisted and long, so you can get away with an abbreviated top–think a close fit one shoulder number or a strapless bustier if you’re feeling racy:

    More Forever 21…
    ShopStyle

Try on a bunch with the skirt to see which one looks/feels best.

Lastly, Liceika says, “I recently purchased a great pair of Christian Louboutin spike flats and I am having a hard time finding the right outfit.”

“… Being that its getting cold can I wear a skinny pant with socks and the flats?”
Cute shoes! I’d say yes to the skinny pants, no to the socks. If you’re worried about your feet getting cold, I’d recommend you wear a pair of skin toned sheer stockings under your pants. Find brands pegged for brown skinned Bombshells in this post.
    That does it!
    Hope those were helpful.
Stay tuned for my New Year’s Fashion Resolutions and much, much more!
    Smootches!

    Claire’s 2012 Fashion Resolutions

    by Claire

    Happy Friday Bombers and Bombshells!
Tomorrow we’ll be waving goodbye to a very good year, and saying hello to 2012.
2011 was amazing for The Fashion Bomb with magazine shoots, the evolution of Fashion Bomb TV, and international fashion weeks.
The sky’s the limit for 2012…

…but before I get into my goals for the future, let’s see how I did with last year’s resoutions!

    1. Wear more accessories

Last year I pledged to curb my conservative tendencies and pile on the jewelry. I proceeded to do it up with stacked bling bangles, Melody Ehsani baubles, and more.

    2. Out with the old, in with the new.

I’ve been working diligently in 2011 to make sure my closet doesn’t overflow with unneeded items. In addition to being very generous with my sisters and mom, I’ve also practiced putting things I probably can’t wear again on Ebay. After being snapped dozens of times in the Parker dress above, to Ebay it went! It hurt my heart, but a well-edited closet is a great closet.

    3. Attend more international fashion weeks.

In addition to attending two seasons of shows in New York, London, Paris, and Milan, I also hit up Jamaica Style Week.

    4. Bring Back Fashion Bomb TV

With the help of the fabulous Dondy Desir of DsEyezProductions, we’ve been able to revive Fashion Bomb TV with exclusive interviews and quality editing.

    For 2012, I’d love to:
    1. Attend even more fashion weeks.

This year was full and exhausting with all my country hopping, but I’d still love to see what other countries and continents have to offer. I’m set to fly off to Dubai in February and will hopefully be able to swing by Japan and Nigeria this year. Let’s get it!
    2. Take more fashion risks.

Yes, I’m a far cry from my cable knit J. Crew days, but I’m also far from edgy. In 2012, I pledge to push myself outside of my comfort zone, focusing on prints and textures.

    3. Do more TV.

You may not know this, but a long, long time ago I had dreams of doing TV. In college I completed internships at PBS and ABC, and was a page at NBC for a short time before my first full time magazine job (yes, I was like Kenneth from 30 Rock. Yes, we’re both from Stone Mountain, Georgia). At any rate, the Fashion Bomb has opened up so many opportunities to do on air stuff. I have a long ways to go, but I’d love to continue to bring the Fashion Bomb to life on the small screen.

    4. Launch a lifestyle site.

There’s more to life than fashion! In 2012, stay tuned for a Fashion Bomb offshoot that will cover everything from food to travel and art. Of course we’ll keep fashion in the mix.

And as this year ends, I want to THANK YOU for your support. 2011 has been AMAZING! From features in Essence to Ebony, Covergirl campaigns, talking fashion on BET, and meeting fabulous people, this year has been the BOMB.

I couldn’t do it without Fashion Bomb contributors Jihan, Faith, and Danielle, graphics designer Ashley, and webmaster Zillz. Much love to Fashion Bomb photographer Marta and videographer Dondy. And a BIG OLD HUG to Fashion Bomb readers. You make blogging a true joy and your comments, e-mails, and support inspire and motivate me.
Let’s keep the party going in 2012.
What are your New Year’s Resolutions?

The Fashion Bomb News Breakdown: Coclico’s ‘Kentucky Negro’ Boots, More Beyoncé Birth Rumors, and Cancelled Target x Missoni Orders Finally Filled

    by Jihan

    • American Shoe company Coclico has a pair of knee high boots for sale on Amazon.com that come in the season’s most coveted shade, Kentucky Negro, to match your Latino tan pants from Temperley London.

Coclico makes more than one shoe in this “negro” shade, but on their main website, they refer to the color as “black.” While several apologists have been rationalizing this glaring misnomer, saying “negro means black in Spanish and Portuguese,” the company does not make any shoes in “Southern Redneck.” (Styleite)

    • Jennifer Saunders has confirmed to New York Magazine, that she is indeed writing an AbFab movie, to be shot “in a beautiful part of the Riviera. I fancy the south of France in the spring,” she said. The writer/actress is also in the process of writing an AbFab TV Special to celebrate the London Olympics in August of 2012 (Huff Post, NYMag)

    • Rumor is spreading through the twitterverse that Beyoncé has already given birth to a baby girl, and her name is Tiana-May Carter. Why the UK Mirror has picked up on this story is beyond me, as the child is clearly going to be named Brooklyn, and will share the last names of both her parents. Duh! Any stan worth her weight in Bohemian/Yaki hair knows this! (UK Mirror)

    • Felita Harris, Senior VP of global sales for Donna Karan, talks to Style Blazer about how she built a successful career in fashion.  (Style Blazer)

    • If your Target x Missoni order was cancelled, you may be getting the pieces you asked for after all– for free. Target has been sending slighted customers e-mails saying their (very late) orders are on the way, and they will not be charged. (The Cut)

Your Five Beauty Commandments for the New Year

    by Danielle

2012 will be our most beautiful year yet, Bombshells!
But first we must all (leave no fashionista behind) pledge to do the following…

    1. Thou shall wear sunscreen every day even if it’s cloudy and even in the winter. Thou shall also not believe the hype that our darker skin tones protect us from the sun. Not only can harmful UVA and UVB rays break down collagen causing premature wrinkles and fine lines, they can also cause skin cancers that for women of color can be more severe than what occurs with our Caucasian counterparts.

And you know those pesky brown spots we’re prone to? They’ll only become more noticeable without proper sun protection. Needless to say, slather (or powder with a mineral sunscreen) up. See 8 Sunscreens That Won’t Make You Ashy.

    2. Thou shall not be scared of color. Look folks, we’re like two seconds away from 2012 and if you’re a Black woman still afraid of wearing color on your face, STOOOOOOOOP. We look GREAT in color–and not just the same purples and golds that are almost always pushed our way. Need some ideas? Check out all of this year’s Weekend Makeup Idea posts and try out a few looks.

    3. Thou shall wear blush. Sometimes just a simple mention of the word blush makes some women cringe and duck like it’s kryptonite. Perhaps there’s some urban legend out there that claims a woman accidentally put on too much rouge and an evil queen locked her away in a tower forever that has people so shook. Who knows? But read my lips—ok my font—you won’t look like a clown! Blush is your friend—it warms the skin, makes you look more alert and helps bring out your cheekbones which can also help slim the face.

Quick blush rule of thumb: the darker the skin, the brighter the blush. See more in Blush 101.

    4. Thou shall have perfect brows. A beautifully manicured brow frames the face, can make you look younger, and makes your eye makeup looks standout. Having them professionally shaped is your best bet, but you can grab some at-home tricks in Beauty Bomb : How to Shape and Care for Eyebrows.

Severely drawn-in and bad-angled brows need not apply. EVER.

    5. Thou shall have awesome hair. Whether your hair is relaxed, natural, or you wear wigs or weaves, having a great hairstyle that flatters your face shape makes you look more confident, more stylish, and more vibrant. Thou shall also have hair that complements your fashion style. Need some ideas? Check out the hair tag.

Do we all pledge to these resolutions? Want to add more to the list? See you in the comments section :)

Splurge: Rihanna’s Barbados Vacation Missoni Danimarca Zigzag Bandeau Bikini

    by Faith

Rihanna is soaking up the sun and getting some much-deserved R&R in Barbados with her family. While working on her tan on the beach, she rocked a $390 Missoni Danimarca Zigzag Bandeau Bikini:

Her two-piece bikini features the brand’s signature chevron pattern, a strapless top with a sweetheart neckline and low-rise bottoms.

Not sure about the jersey-inspired cover-up and snapback, but I am loving the swimsuit! Definitely getting me ready for my seaside pursuits in 2012.

What do you think? Are you feeling Rihanna’s swimsuit? If so, get some more budget-friendly options here.

Fashion Discussion: What’s Wrong With Men in Leopard?

    by Jihan

Last week, we published this post about Drake‘s Supreme x North Face Leopard Nupste jacket. When I initially saw the jacket, I thought it was cool and different, and wondered if I could find it in my size. But it seems that many Fashion Bomb Readers didn’t share the same sentiment.

    The offending garment

The post was greeted with remarks like; “I better not see any straight guys walking around in this crap.” and “Though I know of some very straight men that could pull this look off, I still stand and shout a resounding “Hell NO!” It has nothing to do with being creative or having and “eye”. Some things real men just don’t wear.”

Statements like these got me thinking. Since when are animal prints, which (as I later commented) occur naturally on both male and female animals, gender specific? And if animal prints are feminine, what do we think about traditionally male clothing: boxers, ties, cuff links, etc. being made in those patterns?

Kanye West is comfortable with his masculinity in this leopard print jacket

This reminds me of the age-old debate: should/ do” real men” wear pink? After all, pink is just a color, and was not seen as designated to a specific gender until the 1940s. In fact, a 1918 issue of Ladies’ Home Journal says: “The generally accepted rule is pink for the boys, and blue for the girls. The reason is that pink, being a more decided and stronger color, is more suitable for the boy, while blue, which is more delicate and dainty, is prettier for the girl.” So if the gendering of color is so arbitrary, why do we place gender restrictions on who can wear certain prints?

As time and fashion continues to progress, what we deem appropriate attire for either gender is going to change. At one point, men used to wear high heels, and what we think of today as dresses (togas). So if things like that are subject to change, why shouldn’t something as trivial as a certain type of print have the same flexibility?

We’re pretty sure men are supposed to wear these, too.

At the end of the day, I think Drake’s jacket was hot, and if I was approached by a man wearing something like it, I’d be too impressed with his ability to take fashion risks to turn him down! What do you think?
