Ty wrote in asking, “I am totally confused on which nail shape I should rock for the fall. Do you recommend pointed nails or short round nails with jewel tone nail polish. What is the trend? Please help!”

Hey Ty!
While celebs like Rihanna and Amber Rose are sporting super long oval tip nails, the trend isn’t for everybody (I’ve never understood how people with really long nails maneuver around but chalked it up to me just being clumsy).
Oval tips are on trend this season and look super chic on shorter nails, but the real trend is more bringing it back to the old school with texture (like the “manicube” CND created at Binetti during NYFW) or design (like the “Manolo manicures” at Sarafpour) than the shape of the nail.
What’s cool with the craze in nail designs is that while you can pop into your favorite nail salon to get your favorites done, you can also hit Sephora or your beauty supply store for the tools to create your own signature designs at home. Like most everything else, you can find cool tutorials for nail designs from pros like celebrity manicurist Sophy Robson.
For those who want something more classic yet still trendy, dark polish colors like black, burgundy, and navy look great on all skin tones. My current favorite is Dashing Diva Limo Service, a glossy inky black used on all the models at L.A.M.B.’s fall 2011 runway show. You can also go vampy and have a no-chip manicure with a number of gel manicure services available such as CND Shellac.
And of course no nail trend would be complete without arm candy via stacks of mixed bracelets and cocktail rings.
What are your favorite nail designs?

As for nail shapes I always say go with the shape of your cuticles. Mine are square, I would never go with a rounded tip.

Great Tip, Marsha D!

Marsha I never thought of that! Mine are square too. Thats a great tip that rounded tip has never looked good on my hands and thats probably why.

Oval shape looks great on others but is not for me. I am loving the textured trend.

Why thank you Marsha for that wonderful tip. I tried to do the round but it just didn’t look right except for on my pointer fingers, for some odd reason my cuticles are a little bit more rounded on those two nails.

Yeah Marsha, that is a great tip. And I will say don’t worry about the nails trends, just go with whatever makes you happy. That’s what I do :-)

the rounded pointed shape is not new.. my aunt wore her nails like this for as long as i can remember.. she said it looked more natural then the square..

I recently switched to rounded for the winter. I figure id give it a try and then switch back to my regular “squ-oval” that im used to. i just started on a natural nail journey after taking a break from the destructive harmful acyrlic nailshop horror process when i was younger.
now that i look at my hands, my cuticles are rounded so maybe im on to something. my gran has been getting her nails done since before i was born (atleast 30 years) and she always had the natural round nails now that i think about it.

Great tip Marsha! Guess I’ll stick with rounded nails! :)

It isn’t for me, I’ am the square/oval girl…lol

I’ve always wore my natural nails long and oval (not as oval like the pic above) It just looks better to me. Square looks weird on me..lol

I gotta try some new colors this weekend. Side Note: I want every single jewelry piece you selected (sans the lime green charm bracelet)!

I always wear mine square and rounded on the edges… I am wearing OPI Rainbow Connection, from the Muppets Collection. It makes me happy when I look at it. lol It had the same affect on the women in the nail salon;they couldn’t stop smiling. I’m going to buy all of the glitter ones..

I remember when I wasn’t allowed to wear black nail polish…LOL it was crazy because I was into heavy metal. lol My mom said it was satanic. Until this day, grown and all, I think twice about wearing black nail polish.lol

Ok… I’m inspired to try something new on my nails this weekend. I’m really liking the metallic gold and the glittery ones. We’ll see…

Love this post, the Ombre effect looks great on any shape nails. I’m rocking the stiletto nail, and im loving it!, even more than my square nails, and now that I checked, my cuticles are round lol, thanks!

@Indigo
same here. I went to the shop once and came home with black polish with a snake charm on one of the fingers. Mom had a fit.
