The Fashion Bomb News Breakdown: Fashion Critics Slam Kanye West’s Collection, June Ambrose Reality Show Already Filming, and a Look at the Versace x H&M Campaign

    by Jihan

    • While DW by Kanye West gave many of you “life,” it seems to have had the opposite effect on fashion’s toughest critics. in a review for The Wall Street Journal titled “Good Thing Kanye West Has a Day Job,” (ouch!) Christina Brinkley said of one look: “The only thing more painful than witnessing the dress was watching the model pitch down the runway in shoes so ill-fitting that her spike heels were bending at angles. ‘I feel sorry. Why not take that look out?’ asked one cringing magazine editor.” and “a vast quantity of luxury materials can’t blind people to a lack of creative marksmanship. There’s something about fashion design that makes untrained people think they can do it, too.” Yikes. But if we know anything about Yeezy, he’ll be sure to push his product, and I warrant we’ll see some of his pieces on a few celebs. I mean, he did sell 808′s and Heartbreak. (WSJ)

    • Sessilee Lopez stars in Suno‘s fashion film for Fall/Winter 2011. Created by co-designer Max Osterweis, the film features models running with slow-mo urgency, a trunk in a pool, an abandoned mansion, and ominous piano music that sounds like it came from a WWII movie. (Fashionista)

    • June Ambrose‘s reality show, Styled by June, is already taping. The stylist stopped by Paul Stuart in NYC to style actor Jaleel White. Strapping, no? (Beauty is Diverse)

    • And now, another knockoff from Forever 21. Compare their “Sparkling Triangles necklace,” $14.80 on the left to Made Her Think‘s “Horizons Necklace” for $345. (The Cut)

    • Here’s a look at one of the Versace x H&M ads! This collection is taking me back to the 90s so hard. Now, if only we could turn the clock back to that good economy and awesome Nickelodeon programming! What do you think? (Fashin)

    • According to WWD, Jason Wu will be the next designer to collaborate with Target. Wu said, “The exciting thing about this limited edition collection of affordable women’s wear and accessories is that it allows me to reach a wider audience and bring my designs to people who may not have been able to purchase them before…My collection for Target is chic and wearable. I think women everywhere will enjoy it.” (WWD)

I’ll take a gander and say that if this was a different celebrity debut, the reception would have been warmer. I’ve seen lines met with rave reviews when what they’ve produced is sleep inducing. I’ll also add that there is a political structure about fashion that allows many lackluster designers to flourish because of who they know.

Was I wowed by his line? Not necessarily, but he had some great silhouettes. Personally, I need to know the context of anything Kanye produces before I can fully appreciate it, whether I like it or not. If his heart is in it -which I believe it is, then he’ll continue to grow from a solid start.

But then again I’m just blogger who sews and makes patterns, so what do I know? lol…

I felt what the writer wrote about taking a look out. I felt that way about a few looks but especially the bronze (I think that was the color or something close) top & pants look & the blue sweatshirt w/short shorts look. Some of his pieces were very nice but a lot of it seemed rushed & put together.
Idk I guess I was hoping for this big beautiful collection because of the rumors of unwearable clothing, great luxurious fabrics but mainly because of Yeezy’s fashion sense. *shrugs*

Christina Brinkley hasn’t done her homework. Kanye has an extensive history in fashion training, from his internship at Fendi to designing for Louis Vuitton and Nike, and if you want to get real, going back to his time in art school before he was even famous. Not to mention the fact that he was responsible for the shift away from oversized clothing in rap. I may be revealing my unnecessary knowledge of Kanye here…

I can say that it wasn’t my favourite thing ever, but I was very impressed (to be honest, more impressed than by Prada’s latest) and Christina Brinkley seems to be trying to find something to HATE when really it is underwhelming at worst.

I’ll give Kanye an A for effort. I change my whole attitude about him when I saw the photo of so many of the Parisian fashion greats and icons at his show who can also serve as a mentor to him. Most people were angry because he is a celebrity who can afford to produce his own show while it is extremely difficult for an emerging designer. His designs were mostly for a younger woman, but I love that he named his collection after his mother and what better way to pay homage.

Interning does not a designer make, although I will admit some would slam him regardless of what he showed. This was a mess and his delusion of grandeur by debuting his first show at Paris Fashion Week, only showed his naivete. Zac Posen was run out of Paris and they booed Tom Ford off the catwalk for taking over Yves St. Laurent. He could have showed in New York, and better still backed a minority designer. And what was with the lack of minority models? He got what he deserved in my opinion.

The problem is, is that in Europe, they don’t care about the “celebrity” aspect. They are still, for the most part in it for the fashion. So if a big name like Kanye puts a shoody line they’re gonna slam him for it.

I think Kanye should have waited to debut his line. I’m not designer, but I feel some of the looks were unfinished. I looked at the photos about 5 times over the weekend and tried to pull out something spectacular, but I couldn’t find it. I wasn’t wow’d, I didn’t get any inspiration from the looks, but I believe he can do great things in the industry with more experience.

Caribbelle I agree though. I think because it’s Kanye people are not going to give him a fair shot! I love Kayne and i am blind to his damn imperfections so I guess I shouldn’t be commenting, but at the same time, these were influenced by some great fashion lines, and I’m willing to bet IF Balmain sold that bandage dress, and that outfit Chanel Iman rocked people would say that OH it’s AMAZING! What i really think that Kanye should have done was designed the stuff under some on else, and when the reviews came in, he should have been like BAM Thats my Shit! It’s like that movie Having our say. That black girl was a good student went to college before it was popular for blacks to strive and she would turn in her paper, and the professor would give her an F before even looking, she switched papers with a white friend and got an A on it. I’m not saying that his line is Lagerfeld worthy, or anything along that line but I do feel like people see Kanye West and think……UM! I can tell you just from the tweets I saw on my TL.

Kanye’s line was terrible, so the bad reviews were to be expected. There’s a huge difference between a Lerger Bandage dress and those things Kanye sent down the runway, let’s be honest. And that terribly sewn beading on that ill-fit jacket Chanel wore would not ever see a Balmain runway. Kanye just isn’t a designer, it’s not a big deal. He just doesn’t have any talent when it comes to fashion.

      Versace at H&M sounds great.

      * edit– I don’t think he would be slammed if the line were good. When Victoria Beckham premiered her line the critics were ready to attack, but her line was great and the reviews reflected it.

Just wanted to say that I was at the June Ambrose filming on Saturday and she is absolutely fabulous! She’s so down to earth and is a very warm person. I really enjoyed seeing her style Jaleel and she gave great tips on styling clients.

As for Kanye, I really, really, really wish he would’ve done menswear. Like there are a GAZILLION womenswear designers (celebs and other). We need more men dressing like Kanye not another random collection of womenswear that no one can really wear or understand. So although, I love Kanye I was disappointed b/c this doesn’t remind of him or his take on fashion. That’s why it’s a disappointment. Kanye is the cool guy with the freshest clothes so what does he really know about what a woman wants to wear?! Maybe next season will be better. *fingers crossed*
