Vanity Fair recently released their 72nd annual Best Dressed list, and included soulful singer Janelle Monae in their rundown:
In the article Monae cites Karl Lagerfeld as her style muse and says a black Chanel cape was her favorite purchase in the past year.

I honestly think she looks the same way all the time. May be a different suit or a different top…but it’s always just that. Some kind of tuxedo/suit.

I love me some Janelle Monae, but I must admit I’m over her style or lack there of. All of the black and white is killing me. I’d love to see her switch it up from time to time. Her hair do is signature enough for her not to give us the same look day in and out. And no, I don’t think she’s one of the world’s best dressed, maybe best tailored, but not dressed.

I like Jenelle and her music but she is NOT one of the worlds best dressed. If she says she’s about art then she should know that fashion is art and art consists of variety, color shapes and form and her style does not exemplify that description at all. She very one dimensional, every thing she wears (and even her hair) is a version of the last thing she wore. That’s not fashion to me. Maybe the first 3 times, but after seeing that so much I am tired of it. If she exemplified her fashion sense with her music, we would be listen to ‘Cold War’ in a different tempo every time. I say do u, but spice it up a bit.

That’s surprising to me…best dressed? She never deviates from wearing the same black and white combination that she wears, leaving nothing more for style. Janelle is a beautiful woman, but I would love to see her step her game up by playing around with different colors, and quite frankly, doing a complete 360 on her style.

I agree: She does always look the same. I’ve never seen her in anything except a tuxedo and a cape. She does look cute in all the tuxedos she rocks, but do I think she deserves the “best dressed” title for it? No.

She dresses well in her individual way and of course she lacks variety in her costumes, but, that is her trademark, as an artist.

I am so glad others see what I see. She is a great talent and when she first came on the scene, her style was refreshing. Now to me, it’s repetitive. She should maybe add some twists to her to her look or maybe color to the same look.

When people wear the same colors and pieces all the time, the tendency is not to look at the actual outfit. In the case of Ms. Monae, my thoughts were what is so great about black pants and a white shirt or all black. However, this time I actually looked at Ms. Monae’s clothes in the photos and thought they were stunning. I once saw a photo spread where Ms. Monae was wearing a colorful dress and she had her hair out . She really looked nice. I realize she has a signature style but there is nothing wrong with moving away from that look considering how great she looked in the dress and a different hair style.

i love her style….it maybe somewhat one dimensional but with reason and she OWNS it. Yes, she should def be on this list. What I love most about Miss Monae is that she’s all about her music/ her art…her look is just enough to reel you in it catches your attention but it’s her music that keeps you coming back for more…and thats the way i think it should be… a lot of these artist need to take note and refocus..ijs

Fashion is not variety, Fashion is about PERSONALITY, INDIVIDUALITY meaning knowing exactly who you are and being comfortable with it no matter who you are, it doesn’t matter if u are freakin’ plumber or a chief of state. It’s about consistence
Fashion it is not about Carnival/Christmas/trashy looks like Rihanna presents every other day, neither that “wanna be fashion cutsy look of the kardashians”. It’s not about whoring all labels of the fasion universe like Beyonce
Janael is one of the best dressed exciting ppl in U.S, top designers worldwide will take ideas of her style work make into pieces/collections.

I do love and admire her staple signature look. It’s unique and a statement within itself. I LOVE how she and Kurt live vicariously through each other. I, personally, wouldn’t say it’s the world’s best dressed, but she’s definitely one of the greatest.

I think she is one of the world’s best dressed.She may not take risks as a Gaga or Rihanna (whom i love btw) but her style is classic, she NEVER has an off day, and everything is impeccably tailored! If that isn’t fashion i don’t what is!

I LOVE Janelle Monae’s style! I love how she has chosen just 2 colors to create her signature style and continues to do so many styles with the hues! Inspired by those that have to wear uniforms everyday, Janelle Monae has taken black and white to another creative level.

The god is in the details. I’m sure most girls can agree that their boyfriends thinks every LBD is the same dress, and its not. I think her style speaks to the quality of her signature garments. Quality, now thats a fashion principle we’ve all forgotten while mimicking celebrity outfits reproduced by Forever and TopShop.

I adore that she is sticking to what works for her,but she does not to enjoy variety it will spice up your life. Being the same makes you look boring but variety will give you an edge that’s why ppl like Rihanna so much! But never the less she is stylish and she has her own style just explore with it.

best tailored DEF! shes an amazing dresser…but shes always the same…which i actually love bc shes dedicated to her style…shes committed to her look, which i respect…but best dressed means versatility and she hasnt shown any…love her to death tho :)
