Cheri says, “I was wondering if you guys could suggest some affordable midi and long skirt styles for plus size women.”

” I’m a US size 12/14 and 5’7″ and I’ve personally been afraid to buy long skirts because they tend to look frumpy on bigger girls. However, I’m studying abroad in Cairo in the fall and jeans just won’t cut it in the heat (and skirts at the knee or above are definitely frowned upon). Please help!”
Midi and maxi skirts can be supremely flattering, no matter your size. If you choose to pull one on, just be sure to take care with proportions. The more voluminous the skirt, the more close fit the top. If your goal is to look slimmer, black is always a good choice. Also, the straighter the skirt, the leaner you’ll look.
American Apparel and Asos are good places to find cute long skirts for less. If you want a few more options, we found the looks below (all under $150):

Check out Lev & B New York……I hear the designer is directing her focus on Maxi skirts & dresses, and caters to the plus sized community. Not sure if the web site is up yet but I hear she will be making a Fall 2011 debut. HAWTNESSS!

@Terilili
If your talking about the first photo.. I think that is Toccara from Americas next top model and she’s modeling for Evans UK website. The skirt is their long black accordion skirt and the top is a bathing suit if I remember right. I also think the shoes were just flats she modeled on her tip toes. Hope that helps.

Also the second photo was Raven and she was on hot or Hmm on this blog a while ago. She was wearing an American apparel top and some skirt..

@Terilil What Tamara said.
And @Tamara I know the picture with Raven got many the hmm…but it’s surprisingly hard to find pictures of plus sized celebs, much less plus sized celebs wearing maxi skirts. All the former plus sized stars have slimmed down (Jennifer Hudson, Jordin Sparks, Raven Symone), and most wear outfits at or above the knee.

That’s a lovely pic of Toccara!

@Claire
I completely agree. Being plus sized myself, I own a couple midi length skirts. I love them but don’t want to look matronly or frumpy because I’m kind of short (5’5″) but its about proportions.. wearing killer heals if need be or rolling the skirt up a bit, tucking in a cute tank top and throwing on a belt. These skirts can be worn so many ways and is not just for straight sizes. As for Raven I do think a different top would of been better to be honest. Oh and if Cheri V is looking for more options asos curves has a few options in different colors and a black and white striped skirt I own and love.

Claire, Not a good choice of photos ..since these celebs have now slimmed down..and they aren’t even plus size in the pics….Maybe you should have searched pics of Lisa Raye daughter..Ty..she still models for plus-sizes…#JustSaying…

Btw..Tocarra and Raven look beautiful!

love the first photo though I would never think of a size 12 as plus size (given the height) but oh well its the fashion world but I would vote for asos as well

This section of the blog is suppose to give us tips on where to find plus size clothing right? She why did the writer refer us to American Appearel for a maxi skirt? They dont sell plus size. I was so excited when I seen the topic for this entry because this is the exact kind of skirt I have been looking for, but still I have no insite as to where I can find one.
