Hey, it’s summer. It’s going to be hot and it’s going to show on our faces. But if you prefer to not look like you set your makeup with castor oil, check out these five tips.
1. Try a mattifying moisturizer. You might be tempted to skip your moisturizer during the summer because the extra layer just feels like too much, but you must fight the urge. Every skin type needs a moisturizer—you need it to help the skin continue to produce a substance called collagen which helps keep the skin plump and firm. If your normal moisturizer is too heavy for summer switch it out with a mattifying moisturizer designed to keep shine at bay. Try one like Cosmedicine Medi Matte Oil Control Lotion.

2. Use a primer. While not everyone needs a primer, if you have oilier skin, larger pores, skin texture issues (acne, wrinkles, etc.), or notice your makeup doesn’t last as long as you would like it to, definitely try one. Primers help to smooth the skin’s surface, prepping it for foundation. My personal fave: Mally Perfect Prep Poreless Primer.
3. Carry blotting papers/powder in your purse. Even if you use an oil-control moisturizer and a primer, you’ll still need to touch-up throughout the day. Keeping a stash of blotting papers like Johnson & Johnson Clean & Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets or a compact like MAC Blot Powder (be sure to replace the sponge every 3-4 weeks) will ensure you stay matte. It’s also good to spritz your face with a makeup spray like Make Up For Ever Mist & Fix to avoid the dreaded cake face look.
P.S. If you’re ever in a bind and need to blot, grab some napkins from Starbucks or Chipotle—the quality of the paper is excellent for absorbing oil.

4. Switch to matte finish foundations. We all want to have that gorgeous summer glow, but some of those luminous foundations just don’t stand up well in warmer temps. If you tend to get oily, switch to a matte finish foundation. Many matte formulas today don’t have that harsh, overly made-up look to them as they used to. Try Black Opal True Color Foundation or Make Up For Ever Duo Mat.
5. Use makeup with a powder finish. Powders absorb oils better than other finishes. Using powder versions of products like blush, bronzer, and even foundation won’t make you as shiny as their cream or liquid counterparts.
