Hey Bombshells!
A few weeks ago Vogue Italia (who I’ve written for for the past year), asked me to write an article for their tribute to Black Beauties. In the spread, Jeneil Williams, Cici Ali, Ubah Hassan, Gayle McDonald, Kelly Moreira, Jae Childs, R’el Dade, Jasmine Tookas, Lily Taylor, and Ariel Meredith rock everything from Afros to slicked back hairstyles, modeling looks by Missoni, Prada, Ports 1961, and more.
Check out a few scans:

Check out my article:

See my name?
While I figure out if they’re releasing an English edition, you can see the rest of the scans at Vogue Italia.
And if you’re interested, here’s the original text (though I’m sure they edited):
With bright eyes peering out under deliciously curled lashes, cheekbones and jawbones contoured as if chiseled from sharp stone, full noses, and sumptuously lush lips, black women are unquestionably beautiful.
A tribute is due to the woman whose skin tone ranges from alabaster to mahogany to smooth onyx, who can flawlessly carry any makeup look—from gold dusted lids to fuchsia blush to ripe purple and pink glosses. These pages pay homage to the versatile woman whose hair can oscillate from a tightly coiled and coifed Afro, to sleek layers, to a slicked back pixie cut in a matter of minutes. To the divine woman whose enviably full lips, strong, white teeth, and delightful smile have been known to electrify the hearts of many. To the siren whose smooth, velvety skin blocks the sun yet remains supple and unblemished with the passage of time.
Variable and diverse, black beauty escapes simple classification. But no matter the incarnation—whether the color of molasses, café au lait, bronze, tan, or tinged like desert sand—black beauties radiate with poise and multidimensional splendor.
Jeneil Williams, Cici Ali, Ubah Hassan, Gayle McDonald, Kelly Moreira, Jae Childs , R’el Dade, Jasmine Tookas, Lily Taylor and Ariel Meredith are featured in “Tribute to Black Beauties” Vogue Italia May 2011 photographed by Ellen von Unwerth and styling by Giulio Martinelli.

I love the colors in the shoot. But i must say European magazine spreads always have Black models in huge Afro wigs why?? Do they have problem portraying them w/ afro wigs, or out of the African Safari?? I mean i think it’s beautiful to embrace your roots but it’s just something i noticed a lot in fashion mags black models are constantly wearing afro wigs.

did you have any choice in the title? why always the qualifier? i just don’t understand that why in 2011 this is called “Black Beauties”. I don’t see other editorials titled, “Asian Persuasion” or “White Hot” or “Sexy Latinas”. I definitely think that, in your position now within the title should have been addressed. Black people have not just been discovered as a new race of people, for those that were unsure

I Love it! Even though I am not a fan of the title; this does pay tribute to the beauty of black women in an industry inundated with white ideals.

Congrats Claire on the contribution! I’m not going to rain on your parade because I’m reading the piece from an Afrocentric viewpoint and I guess the target audience is largely European (specifically Italians). Perhaps in the future contributions could move away from stating the obvious and discuss more exciting, diverse issues that relate to the black community with regards fashion and/or beauty.
