Fashion Discussion: Black Men as Props

    by Claire

I was cruising on one of my favorite fashion editorial sites, Fashion Gone Rogue, when I happened upon this February/March 2011 cover of Russh Magazine featuring Delfine Bafort:

The Belgian model is surrounded by a group of adoring black men, who all seem to be looking at her lustfully. Her white dress, blonde tresses, and aloof stare contrasts markedly with their dark naked skin and enraptured looks.
    Interesting.
The shoot seemed very reminiscent of other editorials I’ve seen in the past few years:

Alessandra Ambrosio, Rob Evans, and TaeJahn Taylor by Matthias Vriens-McGrath for Numero Tokyo January/February 2011.

Chanel Iman for Elle Italia October 2010.

    Gisele Bundchen by Sølve Sundsbø.
Black men being used as props is nothing new. Remember slavery?
In 2011, I think it’s past time to let these tropes go, don’t you think?

    by Claire

Iconic models, designers, and artists gathered yesterday to celebrate the Tribute To The Models Of Versailles 1973:

As we mentioned in this post, the historic French fashion show put American designers on the map. And what set Americans apart? Their use of black models.

The event, hosted by Oscar de la Renta and Stephen Burrows, welcomed and gave tribute to Charlene Dash, Norma Jean Darden, Bethann Hardison, China Machado, Barbara Jackson, Romana Saunders, Pat Cleveland, Billie Blair, Alva Chinn, and Amina Warsuma. Liya Kebede, Veronica Webb, Iman, Jason Wu, Donna Karan, Sam Fine, Veronica Webb, June Ambrose, Estelle, Star Jones, and Soledad O’Brian were also in attendance.

Quick and Easy Work Hair Look: 3 Minute Loose Bun

    by Danielle

The morning routine can be rough—especially if you have to get up in the wee hours of the morning and literally have seconds to get dressed. So this is why I love the idea of a cute loose bun for work. And love that Fashion Bomb reader Maia wrote in asking to see more ways to style hair for occasions such as the J-O-B.

A loose bun is cool because it’s more “fashion” than its sleek counterpart and it doesn’t take much effort to get it. If you have relaxed hair, to get more texture without using heat, try doing your hair in pin curls the night before. Pin curls are achieved by taking sections of hair (the larger the section, the looser the curl) and wrapping it into curl much like you would if you were roller setting the hair and then securing with bobbi pins. In the morning you just take them out and finger comb.

The quickest way to get a loose bun is to gently gather the hair to the back of the head as if you’re making a loose ponytail. Then take the end of the ponytail and pin it to the “base” of the ponytail. Secure the hair at the sides of your hair with pins or decorative clips leaving some hair loose at random sections.

If you have curly or kinky hair, try using the Spin Pin–a hair pin that mimics the shape of a curl that makes pinning the hair up a cinch. If you have shorter hair, you can still get a cute look like this, just secure the hair with a few more pins.

This style is also great for in between salon visits or when the weather is just not trying to let your ‘do shine.

P.S. When choosing hair pins, look for those that are coated and “snag free” that won’t pull your hair out.

    Tools of the Trade:

This was one of my favorite hairdos when I was in the corporate world. I’d sneak in a little of my personality with cute, but not distracting hair pins. What’s your favorite way to style your hair for work?

Hot! or Hmm…: Nicki Minaj’s Giuseppe Zanotti Gold Calfskin Lace Up Ankle Boots

    by Claire

Excuse the Minaj overload, but homegirl has upped her style game for her European trip!
She waved goodbye to London, then stepped out in Paris wearing a slick pair of $850 Giuseppe Zanotti Gold Calfskin Lace Up Ankle Boots:

She wore the seductive shoes (available only for pre-order) with a one piece by Bordelle and a Roberto Cavalli jacket.

What do you think of the shoes? Hot or Hmm?

As an aside, doesn’t she look like she’s having a *great* time?

    Work it, Nicki!

Look for Less: Nicki Minaj’s Giuseppe Zanotti Python Platform Slingbacks + Alaia Dress

    by Claire

Nicki Minaj was photographed leaving T-4 studios in London wearing a white Alaia shift with $895 Giuseppe Zanotti Python Slingbacks:

The python pump has an open-toe, covered platform, wood stacked heel, and adjustable slingback straps with gold-tone buckles.

Nicki’s subdued outfit allows her spotted wig to shine on its own.
    Do you like the look?

If so, get it plus a few options for less here:

Hot! or Hmm…: Keyshia Cole’s Conan O’Brien Performance Gianmarco Lorenzi Booties

    by Claire

Keyshia Cole performed last week on Conan O’Brien wearing bejeweled fuchsia booties by Beyonce fave Gianmarco Lorenzi:

The $1600 suede platform stompers feature the brand’s signature metallic toe cap detail and a stiletto heel.

Most times I ‘get’ why a shoe costs a ton of money, but these…hmmm.

    What do you think?

    Peep Keyshia’s Conan performance here:

Claire’s Life: Roundtable with the Finalists of Bravo TV’s The Fashion Show

    by Claire

So as I mentioned, I had the distinct honor of meeting and chatting with the finalists of Bravo TV’s the Fashion Show today at the Bravo offices in New York!

I was running fashionably late, but Calvin, Jeffrey, and Dominique were all smiles and very welcoming!
A few things I learned: Calvin has no regrets about the way he acted during the show. He said, “I don’t regret anything. I was being myself what could I regret? I worked very hard and I think it showed very accurately what I went through as a designer and as a person.” Regarding designing clothes for larger sizes, they all said that they cater to all shapes and sizes, but that one particular episode featuring the Real Housewives was difficult because of the larger than life personalities in the room. Dominique is starting her own line this year. And Jeffrey hopes to show at New York Fashion Week one day!
They also divulged that there will be tons of surprises for tomorrow’s finale (featuring Mary J Blige)!
Make sure to tune in to Bravo tomorrow at 10pm to see who wins!
*And just for fun, a lil piece of artwork I saw in the hallways of the Bravo offices:

    Cute, right?
