I like Nia Long’s cover

I thought this was really nice. I got to see the whole spread. I find that they keep making mistakes in picking artists to reprise these legends. Its more so which celeb is relevant rather than whose right. For example the Eartha Kitt picture is reprised by Regina King when clearly Tisha Campbell would be a better person. Another example is in the Cadillac Records movie. Beyonce was used to play Etta James. Beyonce (even with her weight gain) looks NOTHING like her. Tamala Mann (Cora:Meet the Browns) would have been a better fit considering size and voice. I hear Beyonce is even playing Eartha Kitt aswell in a biopic. But Beyonce sells more tickets. I do not want ppl to feel like my comment is taking away from their efforts, I just wish they were more realistic.

I want all of them to frame!!! I love it !!!

All the photos were amazing. But Jurnee Smollet and Nia Long’s covers are my favorite. And to @enterntainmentsfuture I feel ur comment but Ebony is a struggling publication right now so they have to choose who sells over who’s more realistic. It may be about commemorating black icons but it’s also about making money so you can continue to publish your magazine.

Loves it! Nia’s is the best one yet.

A hot mess. No sex appeal. She is just smiling like a clown. Ebony needs to get it together.
@EntertainmentsFuture
Beyonce was fantastic in Cadillac records. You don’t need to use clones when making a biopic. You need to find someone who embodies the essence of the character…not their twin.

I love the idea presented here by Ebony magazine and I think they picked a wonderful bunch of talented individuals to pull it off. Congrats to Ebony’s 65th!…chck out the blog…http://divamission.wordpress.com

I figured there’d be Beyonce stans that would have a titty attack regarding my comment. I DID NOT say she didnt do a great job (considering all her roles except one have been “acting” out what she does in real life). I said they need to make the reprised roles more realistic. Even if these icons/legends had twins, they themselves could not play the icons because they would be too old (DUH). You do not need a clone but if your gonna honor and pay homage to someone by replicating their life, you NEED the best and closest thing.
Funny how I applauded Ebony for their efforts but yet the only thing that triggered a response was the fact that I mentioned Beyonce.
JUMP OFF !!!

I am really enjoying these set of covers…but as much as I love me some Nia Long…I don’t think she nailed this cover (hey, maybe there were better shots taken)…I feel that Halle or even Paula Patton could have captured Dorothy in her Ebony cover better
October 21, 2010 12:08 am
Also, may I add…Jurnee Smollett nailed Lena Horne….such a splitting resemblance!!

@ EntertainmentsFuture
Beyonce stans? what does that even mean? you said Beyonce does not look like Etta James and so she wasn’t “realistic”. I responded by saying that Beyonce does not have to look like to Etta James for the movie to be effective. What matters is capturing the essence of Etta, not finding an actress that looks exactly like her. Looking like someone does not necessarily mean you can capture their essence.
So how was that a titty attack? you stated your opinion and I politely stated mine. If there is anyone having a titty attack, it’s you sweetheart. You sound very brass and combative. You are in the wrong site sweety. Take that stank attitude of yours to mediatakeout or bossip.
My final word. Don’t bother replying because I’m ignoring you from now henceworth. Ciao!

I love Nia Long and very pretty woman!
However, I don’t care too much for this cover!

For the record, as far as I know these aren’t covers. When I picked up the 65th anniversary issue, every picture above was in a spread inside the magazine. The actual cover of the 65th anniversary issue just has 4 or 5 of the celebs featured in gray outfits. So if you want the pictures yourself, you can just pick up an issue, they’ll be inside.

I bought this month’s issue of Ebony specifically because of the fantastic vintage replica spreads inside. I think the models were all well-chosen except Samuel L Jackson as MLK. Better choices might have been Pres. Obama, obviously, or Dr. King’s handsome son Dexter, or Denzel, Tyler Perry, or maybe T.D. Jakes. I also agree that Nia Long’s Dorothy Dandridge and Jurnee Smollet’s Lena Horne tributes were the most beautiful, but Regina King as Eartha Kitt and Yolanda Adams as Mahalia Jackson captured some spiritual essence of these women particularly well, I think. Good work, Ebony!
P.S. Lamman Rucker is a cutie, but Idris Elba would have captured legendary Richard Roundtree’s smoking hot sex appeal a lot better
