Fashion Bombshell of the Day : Reiko from Houston

    by Claire

Today’s Bombshell is Reiko from Houston:

She says, “I have a style blog, God’s Favorite Shoes, that allows me to share with others what works for me. I’ve picked up the thrifting bug over the years and find it more rewarding than going to the mall.”

“…I’m an English Teacher and my single goal in life is to not be that teacher who rocks sweaters with apples on them or Crocs. Can’t do it. Not me. Never! I am that teacher who rocks heels to work everyday and kimonos as jackets. It gives my students something to talk about!”

“I can’t really say my style can be described in one term. Since I’m a teacher, I’ll use adjectives: funky, bold, vintage, fun and changing. I don’t always get it right, but it will never be from the lack of trying. Every girl needs a great shoe, large clutch and at least a pair of hoop earrings.”

What a cute style, and a great attitude! I totally cosign the anti-Croc policy.

What do you guys think of Reiko’s style?

Beauty on a Budget: The Dos and Don’ts of Sharing Makeup with Your Girlfriends

    by Danielle

Primpin’ ain’t easy. And if you have a thing for makeup you know all too well how costs can add up just to perfect your face on a regular basis. For those beauties on a budget, sharing makeup with your bestie may be thought of as a good way to subsidize the rising costs of MAC, NARS, and Make Up For Ever, but is it healthy? Let’s break down some makeup items that are OK for sharing and others that will get you a (crusty) side eye.

    1. Eyeshadow: In powder or creme form—absolutely not. There’s way too many things that can get transferred from eye to eye so it’s best not to chance it. Eyeshadow in pigment or mineral form though is mostly A-OK. Before anyone puts their fingers or eyeshadow brush into it, sift a portion out into an empty makeup container. Eyeshadow pigments very rarely get used up by one person so it’s smart to buddy-up and split the costs. Plus their shelf-life is good for up to 2 years since they’re in powder form.

    2. Lipstick/Lipgloss: As in straight from the tube? N-O-P-E. Not even with your sister or cousin…lol. If you love a lipstick color but know you’ll only use it once or twice, cut a fresh (as in brand new) lippie in half and store them in an air-tight makeup container. Voila. Lipsticks have a general shelf-life of about a year. As for gloss, it’s pretty hard to scoop it out of wand containers. Glosses that come in a pot are easier to share although I still wouldn’t recommend due to their stickiness. Gloss usually lasts up to 6 months.

    3. Blush: Not recommended. Most of the time you have to apply blush with a brush or fingers both of which can be breeding grounds for bacteria. But if you get a new untouched mineral blush, pour some out for your BFF. Lasts up to 3 years.

    4. Mascara: NEVER! You shouldn’t even keep your own mascara past 3 months so you definitely don’t want to split it with a friend. Besides, some of the best mascara reside in drugstores for under $8.

    5. Foundation: Not advised. But in untouched liquid, creme, or loose powder form, you can scoop it out or pour it into separate containers and go half with your same-toned friend. Liquid and creme foundation is usually good for 6 months to a year while powder about 1-2 years.

Sak Fifth Avenue to Carry High End Plus Size Womenswear

    by Claire

According to JC Report, Saks Fifth Avenue will soon carry plus size designs by brands like Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, YSL, Alexander McQueen, and Prada:

Saks already has a plus size department, Salon Z, which features designer clothing from names like Dana Buchman and Marina Rinaldi in sizes 14 through 24. For the fall/winter season, however, voluptuous fashionistas will enjoy more options from higher end brands in sizes 14-20, depending on the brand.
The newest looks will only be available in New York, but it might be worth the trip to find a chic Chanel suit cut to flatter more voluptuous body types.

    What do you think?

PS It’s a bit ironic that Chanel will have plus sized clothes after Karl expressed disdain for ’round women’ in a magazine interview last year. Perhaps the brand has finally seen the light–that plus size women deserve to be fashionable too.

Controversey Over Essence Magazine’s New White Fashion Director

    by Claire

Mediabistro announced that African-American magazine Essence recently hired a white fashion director, Ellianna Placas:

Placas, who used to work at O: The Oprah Magazine and US Weekly, will apparently make her debut in Essence’s 40th anniversary issue, on newsstands in September. Although Essence has been looking for a fashion director for quite some time, not everyone is happy with their newest acquisition.

Michaela Angela Davis, former fashion editor of Essence and former editor-in-chief of Honey Magazine, revealed on her Facebook Wall, “It’s with a heavy heart I’ve learned Essence Magazine has engaged a white Fashion Director. I love Essence and I love fashion. I hate this news and this feeling. It hurts, literally. The fashion industry has historically been so hostile to black people–especially women. The 1 seat reserved for black women once held by Susan Taylor, Ionia Dunn-Lee, Harriette Cole(+ me) is now-I can’t. It’s a dark day for me. How do you feel?”

Over 90 people responded to Angela’s statement. Comments ranged from, “DARK,” “Disappointed,” “Essence sold its soul a long time ago,” and, “It’s a sad day for young black women everywhere,” to, “Who’s to say she won’t do a phenomenal job at paying incredible homage to Black female beauty?I wouldn’t write this person off based on race, alone. I *would* be curious to hear more about context – background, past work, and upbringing, even. But based on that single thread of data, I am not upset.”

Michaela went on to say, “It is personal..its also professional. If there were balance in the industry, if we didn’t have a history of being ignored and disrespected…if more mainstream fashion media included people of color before the ONE magazine dedicated to black women “diversified” it would feel different. There is one precious seat at the fashion shows that says Essence the magazine for black women. When asked, “What is your unique perspective for black women?” How is that answered? Even if they got Anna Wintour herself (which editors inside Essence assure me she is NOT) it still would hurt. From a brand perspective there should be a unique lens through which information is filtered…at Essence it is believed that filter is black, female..connected through shared history and soul…I believe we’ve not come far enough for this move.” She added, “It’s the lens, the filter in which the fashion is seen that is difficult. It’s the hope that is through the black imagination and soul our image is projected. We were charged with elevating the black designers and searching for who’s got next and yes Tracy Reese seems to be a lone princess sometimes. My heart breaks as you hope this is the place that would nurture and create black (female) fashion talent on all levels, editors, stylists, designers, photographers, models..an incubator for black talent.”

My thoughts? As a black publication Essence should, as Michaela said, make pains to stick to its original mission of being a magazine created for and by black women. The inside should reflect the outside–which means that a black fashion director would be ideal. We do have our own way of interpreting trends, and that authentic spirit is best relayed by someone from the community. That said, we also must take into account that Essence is a for-profit business owned by a national publishing company, Time Warner. Perhaps they hired Elliana to help them appeal to a broader demographic? Perhaps Elliana was just too good to pass up? Or perhaps Elliana has proven that her vision is profitable. In publishing, the only color that really matters is green.

I’m assuming Essence did a thorough search, though there are so many editors I can think of who would have been perfect–Sydne Bolden Long (fashion editor of In Style), Memsor Kamaraké (former fashion director of Vibe), Chiona Nnadi (fashion director of Paper Magazine). Heck, why not even Michaela herself?

What do you think of this debate?

Who Wore it Better? Trina vs. Rihanna in D&G’s Pre-Fall 2010 Polka Dot Jumpsuit

    by Claire

Trina recently posed on Twitter wearing the same D&G Pre-Fall polka dot jumpsuit Rihanna wore to a concert after party last week:

The ladies accessorized the look almost identically with black belts and black pumps, though Rihanna’s interpretation looks significantly more lively thanks to her red hair and nails.
    It’s a tough choice!

Fashion Quickie : Designer and Stylist Juan Vargas

    by Claire

    Hey Guys!

Today I wanted to quickly introduce you to designer and stylist, Juan Vargas:

The 24-year-old Brooklyn native (center) is the designer for Vanessa and Angela Simmons‘ Pastry line as well as for his own eponymous line.

He also styles for W Korea, Vogue Espana and Vanidads.
How did he get such a cool job? He says, “I went to the High School of Fashion Industries and then went on to the Fashion Institute of Technology. Vanessa and Angela are friends and boos from way back! We met in high school when I asked Angela to model in one of my fashion shows.”
“I began designing things for her, and I did Vanessa and Angela’s hair and makeup for the MTV Awards. After that our bond grew.”
You can now see both Vanessa and Angela wearing Juan Vargas custom creations:

With his fashionable eye I had to ask him about his summer must haves. He said, “For me, I love the Givenchy nightingale bag, brown boots from All Saints, a khaki blazer, and Christian Louboutin studded sneakers in black.”

    More Christian Louboutin…
    ShopStyle

For the ladies, he recommends, “One pair of Christian Louboutins, a great, flattering party dress, chic sandals, a great bag by YSL, Alexander Wang, or another big designer, and a sexy scent like Chanel.”

    More Christian Louboutin…

    Great picks!
See more Juan Vargas fabulousness on his website, www.juanvargasny.com.

    He’s one to watch!
