The New York Daily News declared today that Big Butts were Summer 2010′s hottest ‘trend’:

Citing Beyoncé, Serena Williams, and Kim Kardashian as encouraging this new predilection, they says, “bubble butts are here to stay. Gone are the days of being ashamed of a wider bottom, with America becoming more diverse amid shifting standards [of beauty].”

Of course the article explains that African-American and Latino communities have long respected a voluptuous derriere, but says, “as our population becomes more diverse, we’re appreciating different body parts that are different than the puritanical American roots.”
A quick look on several online stores shows the market has responded with several butt enhancing products:
This all makes me think of the intro to Sir Mix A Lot’s 1992 hit, “I like Big Butts.” Back in the day, Becky and her friend were openly disgusted by the rear of the “Rap Guy’s Girlfriend” (they even said she looked like a prostitute!)
Now it seems, it’s all turned around (no pun intended).
Even Madonna’s daughter Lourdes said on her blog, “I am totally obsessive about ’80s shorts…You know the kind that makes your butt look kinda big.”
What do you think of this new stylish obsession?

July 13, 2010 12:47 pm
This obsession with butts is just a trend, as much as most of us wish that it wasn’t. It’s gonna pass, just like big hair. Oh well, thus is the way of the world. On to the next…
July 13, 2010 12:53 pm
Wow, I’m not surprised at all. The other day I was looking through a bed, bath and beyond slip and on the dorm room page there goes a but pad ad. At first, I’m like wtf? is going on here. So girls have to accessorize the butt too when walking to and from class?! It makes no sense. Here’s a trend: why not be happy with what you already have? Novel!
July 13, 2010 12:55 pm
This is just funny..!!! Lool..!!!
July 13, 2010 12:58 pm
@Joanne_ I saw that ad also! LOL… did u see that lil mp3 player that asked did he have a butt? rotfl
Its sad how mainstream media thinks this is a fashion “trend”….wow. That means here today, gone tomorrow.
Why not just celebrate the essence of curves and beauty?!
July 13, 2010 1:14 pm
wow @ the but pads, they look ridiculous
July 13, 2010 1:25 pm
bummer …
no pun intended
& as velvet said it will pass
July 13, 2010 1:32 pm
ri-damn-diculous. *smh*
July 13, 2010 1:42 pm
bestest trend evar!
July 13, 2010 1:54 pm
So what do those naturally big reared girls do when the trend dies down? I guess we’ll see an influx in gettin booty minimizers and lipo… or better yet what about all those chicks who got ginormous but enlargements….just think of what their behind will look like once those things are removed…this is why the true individual and fashionista does not follow trends! She creates them
July 13, 2010 2:00 pm
BUTT INJECTIONS…living in Atl, this is definitely an unfortunate trend I’m witnessing. A nice round butt is a good thing. A 26 inch waist matched up with 48 hips isn’t. Its horrible, and it looks extremely stank/video vixen-ish. I’m sorry, but a tooted up super big booty can make some clothes look cheap. Strapless rompers and leggings have been murdered by some of the chicks down here…but maybe that’s a good thing? *shrug*
July 13, 2010 2:06 pm
I wanna be on trend, lol! *crosses fingers that big breasts come back in style soon*
July 13, 2010 2:10 pm
big butts are “in style” because white people said they are.
it’s a fad.
and soon the very same people who said they are “in” will say they are “out,” causing tons of big-bootied women to go right on back to being ashamed about their blessings.
big butts won’t ever go outta style and don’t let anyone tell you different. ladies, get yourself a man who cosigns this, and continue living a beautiful life enjoying your curves. i know i will.
July 13, 2010 2:18 pm
It’s funny that this is recognized when non-black women suddenly showcase big butts. Black women have always had ample behinds. Everyone knows Beyonce doesn’t have a big butt. She wears butt pads. All of these so-called video models & reality stars are getting injections or surgery to portray this image of being voluptuous. All women have big butts now. They all look the same. It’s so old.
July 13, 2010 2:24 pm
I think its kinda sad that a body part is now a fashion accessory like a purse or something. What should be ‘trendy’ is being healthy and accepting everyone for how they were born. (Exit soap box)
For real though, booty pads are comedy…kinda like the water bra. But when it comes down to it, the people who really matter are gonna know what’s under all that.
July 13, 2010 2:27 pm
Wow a lot of haters commenting on here about big butts. Ever since I was 13 big butts have been the thing, especially down south. I have been shaking mine since booty music was the ish back in the 90′s. Hate on haters!!!!
July 13, 2010 2:36 pm
well booty is neva gonna go out of style in the black community so who cares if its just a trend to others.
July 13, 2010 2:43 pm
okay so just cause its not only excepted in the black community anymore now its a trend….whatev ive always been proud of my booty lls.
July 13, 2010 3:12 pm
It’s really funny when something is ‘ok’ when white girls want to do it. This is not a trend, this is a mainstay in black culture. Becky will buy her butt pads, then store them in the attic once she’s over this.
July 13, 2010 7:09 pm
Ok…so I have a “bubble butt” and I 100% disagree with this trend. Body parts shouldn’t be trends. Especially butts! That’s exploiting! and what about people without “bubble butts”? They have to change who they are to fit in with a trend? Soooo retarded.
July 13, 2010 8:02 pm
African Americans have always set the trends— we set them and they follow and change the name to something else. It’s big butts now but it will be something else next year.
July 13, 2010 8:07 pm
Well, I am one of those “hippy” chicks that has struggled with the Hollywood, razor thin image for years. I am happy that they are acknowledging something that can be associated with our community which ultimately means that we are a major force in the fashion industry (and always has been.) But I will agree that it’s def exploitation but hey, it’s all in fun! Next year it will be bushy eyebrows…
July 13, 2010 8:10 pm
The only reason this is seen as a trend is b/c Becky and her friends enjoy the attention of it – now…its not spreading like wild fire and likely will not…but please believe that its only their butts that are being rallied behind…no one is checking for sistas buts b/c ours are too big and look ew…as one poster said above…smh…
July 13, 2010 8:50 pm
Claire, you have some of the best readers in the world. These comments might be funnier than the booty pad ads. Viva la fashionbomb!!!
July 13, 2010 8:51 pm
I wonder how those “big butts” are going to look after a kid or two gets popped out…..
I always find it funny when young teenage BOY take on (inherit) their mothers’ butt and hips…
=p
July 13, 2010 8:53 pm
* young teenage BOYS take on……
July 13, 2010 8:57 pm
Lol, booties are NOT GOING ANYWHERE! This is a staple, not a trend. hahaha.
July 13, 2010 9:36 pm
Kim K, always get attention about her butt however, there are a lot of beautiful black women who have always had big butts and they never get the same attention. Why is that? Could it be that our country is still ver racist? YES
July 13, 2010 10:00 pm
I am one of those women who was blessed with a big butt. Yes I have been carrying this butt around ever since the second grade. I love my bottom just the way it is. Even before big booties were the in thing. You should love your body as it is. The important thing is to be healthy. I think those butt pads are a travesty. It is misleading to wear one of those. Dude thinks you got a big butt and you sporting a pad on your ass. Thats not fair. Its equivalent to a dude wearing a sock in his pants. It just isn’t right.
July 13, 2010 11:28 pm
I have an ample sized derrière and this is not a trend. I love it, and next year when the mainstream media says that that big butts are out, I will still be proud of it.
BTW, this new trend is nothing new. Does everyone remember in the early 2000s when Jennifer Lopez was getting all of that attention for her backside? The media acted as if Black women never had a butt like hers or bigger before. This is why I can follow trends only so much; I can’t have anyone dictate my validity.
July 14, 2010 12:19 am
Trend?? Puh-leeze. It’s about time the lily- white fashion industry recognized that a woman with a Sponge Bob figure ain’t cute.
July 14, 2010 1:21 am
I am a white girl from small-town Australia and found the Fashion Bomb when searching for stylish curvy looks and instantly fell in love with it. I don’t go to many fashion blogs because many tend to be very conservative about size and shape. I’m not that big, but I’m big-breasted with thick hips/butt/thighs and it’s always been hard to find classy clothes that flatter that. All the women in my family have this problem, and we can all say we’ve been looked down upon by other white girls/women who have that Skinny-Minnie look. I hope that this isn’t a trend, but a changing outlook so that the Fashion Industry as well as the general public will start to realise that all women of all ethnicities come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and maybe all those varieties will start being catered to. The commenters above are right, body parts should not be ‘trends’.
July 14, 2010 2:30 am
Black women came from Africa with round, naturally plump ends. However, this was never accepted as beautiful but rather as disgusting. Now because Kim Kardashian (and other fair skin toned women) have a fake one, this is a certified trend? GTFOH!
July 14, 2010 9:43 am
I think you are way late if this is a trend its been a trend since…….2004!
July 14, 2010 11:04 am
We’ve seen this time and time again. Characteristics from “other” cultures are exploited and use as decoration and fashion- They grab it, use it, then discard it. For example, headscarves/hoods, budda statues, asian style clothing, ethnic prints. Mainstream America decides what is “cool” and everyone falls for it. It’s not whats up when the originator does it, but its real hot when it’s imitated..huh? a slap in the face
July 14, 2010 1:22 pm
yay Heavy-T bumpers :D
but i mean if you have a ample derriere it’s permanently a fashion trend for you so you better WERK it <3
July 14, 2010 7:48 pm
IF YOU GOTTA GO OUT AND BUY AN A$$ BECAUSE ITS A TREND, YOU NEED TO GO SIT DOWN SOMEWHERE…THAT WAY NO ONE WILL KNOW YOU GOT A PANCAKE-LOL
July 14, 2010 8:22 pm
I’mJusSayin just HIT IT ON THE HEAD! I loved how designers would use head scarves & ethnic prints but wouldn’t use any ethnic models. Cornrows became hot when Bo Derek wore them, but Africans had been wearing them for years! As long as you know who originated it, then it’s fine. We’re all beautiful & we don’t need anyone to tell us different.
July 15, 2010 9:26 am
big butts have ALWAYS been in style in the black community and its going to stay that way. if white people are starting to accept big butts, good for them, it’ll look more proportionate with all the huge fake breasts they keep getting. butt injections are horrifying though. i think if anyone is going to get a surgical procedure they shoould at least do it in a doctor’s office.
July 15, 2010 5:35 pm
This was never a “trend” and will never be a trend. Thick women have always been appreciated out side of Hollywood. Who cares about what Hollywood thinks, and this is the reason why I hate trends because there of nothing tomorrow. Coming from myself that is blessed with a “motherland booty” loll i dnt care about what hollywood thinks is in when it comes to the black/ latino woman’s behind
July 22, 2010 9:44 pm
Im also a white aussie chic, from sydney and when i found out that big butts are now ‘in’ lol i was very amused. Maybe i’ll be able to find some clothes that suit my figure now. :)
October 13, 2010 10:48 am
Iam South African teenager and i won’t lie i would love to own a butt pads.I DO NOT HAVE A BLACK PERSONS BOOTY,so y not try it out besides im a glamour and every guy here loves a girl with some meat behind,if u do not have an ass thn u might as well just forget about wanting a boyfriend.IAM SO GOING TO BUY BUTT PADS
July 8, 2011 4:10 am
OOO PLEASE…Big butts is considered sexy/trendy because a white girl has it???..GTFOH…I know some African American women who are way curvier and bigger fuller booties than Kim K and they never got recognized for it…I HATE MAINSTREAM MEDIA!..I’ll rather stick to my cultural television channnels..NEXT
August 9, 2011 1:39 am
Well i think its a trend but just because is a trend for us girls dosnt mean guys will stop loving big booties!!! Girls will eventually stop getting butt implants or injections but the most inportant thing is that men will always love them :-). Thank god mine is natural. And im proud of it (:
September 28, 2011 7:31 pm
I’m a white girl with a black ass (or bubble butt, whatever), and guys of all races love it because it’s round and feminine and delicious. Before this “fad” or whatever it was only the white girls that said I had a fat butt. Now they suddenly love it. Moral of the story is that fads are silly, and every body type is beautiful as long as it is healthy.
