Weekend Makeup Idea: Katerina Graham’s Soft Icy Blue Smoky Eyes and Bronzed Skin

    by The Fashion Bomb Staff

It’s Friday, Fashion Bombshells! And I could not be happier. I plan on spending my 2 1/2 days off slumped over on my couch while watching Lost on Netflix. But if something that actually requires me to leave my house comes up (not likely…lol) I’d ideally love to break out some color on my eyes doing all the fun things that young people do.

If you’re like me and work a day job that requires a “look” totally opposite of what you do on your down time OR if you really want to try out some color which the weekends are perfect for, check out this look spotted on Vampire Diaries star Katerina Graham from last December’s The Lovely Bones premiere. Yes, the pic is old but this look was too cute to pass up. And the best thing about it is whether your French Vanilla, Butter Pecan, or Chocolate Deluxe (© Wu-Tang Clan), you can wear this look. Let’s get started!

    1. As always, beautiful makeup starts with beautiful skin. Cleanse, tone, and moisturize your skin according to your skin type. Be sure to groom your brows and rid the face of any excess facial hair. A look like this will only highlight imperfections so make sure you prep.

    2. Let’s do the eyes first since there’s a good chance of eyeshadow fallout from the smoky eye. This way you don’t have to do your foundation over if you make a mistake.

Apply an eyeshadow base/primer (get one as close to the color of the shadow as you can get if you really want the color to pop, if not a neutral color or one closer to your skin tone works as well). I like MAC Paint, Urban Decay Primer Potion, and the new Make Up For Ever Aqua Creams as eyeshadow bases. You can apply your base with your finger all over the lid (if you’re using a colored base/primer don’t let it go into your brow bone area).

Next apply a smoky icy blue shadow (try MAC Eyeshadow in Tilt) on the bottom portion of the lid and into the crease with a heavy shadow brush (like MAC #217). Carefully blend throughout using circular motions. Jazz it up by using an aqua colored shadow (try MAC Eyeshadow in Aquadiasiac) to line underneath the bottom waterline with a pencil brush (like MAC #219). Then dot the inner corners of the eyes with a lighter blue shadow (like MAC Eyeshadow in Moon’s Refection). Highlight the brow bone with a matte (no shine, no shimmer) eyeshadow about 2-3 shades lighter than your skin tone. You can also use a concealer about 2-3 shades lighter than your skin tone for the brow bone area as well.

Line the inner rims of your top and bottom waterline with black eyeliner. (Make Up For Ever Aqua Eyes in 01 Mat Black) is my fave—it’s waterproof so it stays put on me all day). Finish with 2 coats of mascara.

Be sure to clean up any eyeshadow fallout with a bit of water (or baby oil) and a Q-tip.

And say this blue isn’t your thing, you can replace with your own color combos! If you want ideas on different color combos, check out my post on Combining Colors with the Color Wheel. Works for your wardrobe and your makeup.

    3. Apply a bit of liquid foundation (try Make Up For Ever Face ad Body Liquid Foundation) on the face and add more as needed. I find the least amount of foundation you put on your skin in the summer the better. Plus many formulas only need just a bit to get the job done. Set with loose powder. I love my Becca Fine Loose Finishing Powder, but if oily/shiny skin is a problem for you in the summer, set with Make Up For Ever Super Matte Loose Powder.

    4. Break out the bronzer! Even if you’re already brown or dark brown, bronzer gives skin of color such a beautiful warmth. Celebrity makeup artist Sam Fine swears by both the Cover Girl Queen Collection Bronzers as well as the Iman Collection Bronzers. Make sure you check them out as well as bronzers by NARS, Too Faced, and MAC.

You’ll want to apply bronzer in areas where the sun naturally hits the face: the hollows of the cheeks (make a fish-face to find them), the temples, the tip of the chin, and the bridge of the nose. There are several brushes you can use to apply your bronzer (or just use your fingers…lol). My favorite bronzer brush of the moment is by Crown Brush. Check out their collection of wildy affordable brushes at www.crownbrush.com

After you apply your bronzer, apply a peachy-pink blush on the apples of your cheeks. Mixing blush an bronzer gives skin of color such a beautiful look. Try NARS Blush in Orgasm–it works on everybody!

    5. And for those lips, let’s go with a nude lipgloss. Since all nudes aren’t the same for everybody, be sure to check out my Nude Lipstick for Skin of Color post for some ideas.

    6. To finish, you may want to lightly dab your face with a tissue to remove any excess oils from the face. Then set with a makeup setting spray like Urban Decay De Slick Makeup Setting Spray.

    And you’re done!

I love this look! I think it’s great for the Summer. Just wondering how to pull it off on darker skin. hmmm. Sounds like I’m going to have to do some experimenting.

Enjoy Lost! I caught up on it with Netflix too and those were some of the best weekends ever. It’s great to not have to wait a whole week to see the next episode.

@Jackie this look would be gorgeous on dark skin. I think darker women carry color better in general.
