Beauty Discussion: Would You Cut off All of Your Hair?

    by Danielle

There seems to be another trend in celeb circles involving scissors and a set of clippers–and no, not the shaved sides again. Seemingly throwing beaucoup shade at Hollywood’s definition of beauty, many celebs are taking it all off—their hair that is.

Solange Knowles did it twice—most recently last year she traded in her love of the “dragon” for a close-cropped ‘do. Crooner Chrisette Michelle surfaced a few weeks ago having cut all hers off. And just this week ANTM alum Bre Scullark revealed her super-short coif in a recent photo shoot. All of the ladies seemed to be in consensus that the big chop was liberating and a “rebirth” of their true self if you will.

But would you do it? Have you done it?

Me—my head is too big (literally) to even think about it…lol. Plus I’ll admit I’m too wrapped up in how my hair makes me look. I can barely leave the house without makeup on let alone cut off all my hair. #dontjudgeme #12stepprogram

So let’s hear it! Would you cut off all of your hair?
    ~Danielle

i’d love to, and my younger sister’s done it a couple of times; for South Africans (and perhaps other african nationals) having short hair for a girl is not a big deal, but it has to flatter your face; sadly, i’ve got a big ol’ square block so it wouldn’t suit me but if I had more delicate features it would be my preferred style

Yeah I’ve done it twice too. I didn’t get it cut as low as Chrisette or Solange, more like Bre’s length – the first time to grow back my hair healthy, the second time to go natural. I think cut really showcase you face because you can’t really hide behind bangs/fringes or loads of hair.

Not for me. My head is wayyy to big. And I dunno, I think some women can pull off the no hair look, but I personally equate hair (whether weave, or natural) with femininity. And I think most guys prefer long hair?

I’ve cut my hair super short three times. Twice while it was relaxed and once to go natural. I’m growing my hair back out now because I like the versatility of longer hair

I did it when I first went natural almost 3 years ago. It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. My hair was shorter than all of the ladies in the pictures you’ve shown and I loved every minute of it!! I’m actually thinking about doing it again.

I did my BC 2 years ago. Would I do it again? I don’t know. It was amazing to chop it, but when that hair started growing back, I didn’t know what to do with it. I’m still learning and discovering all kinds of crazy things about my hair.

I was telling my girls we’re in the midst of a Hair Revolution. It’s just beautiful to see the boundaries on hair being broken and redefined to suit and tailor to our own needs as Black women.

I recently chopped all my hair off a la Chrisette and I absolutely love it. I had been wanting to do for the last two years. My choice to cut my hair wasn’t necessarily to go natural but just to change it up again. Now that’s its short I’m not sure when, if ever, I will grow it back.

Nope! I’ve considered going natural and decided that my hair is way too course to play games. If it had just a little more curl to it versus naps, I would do it.

I would NOT cut off my hair because personally I’ve worked and I’m working to keep the length of my hair and to cut it all off would be a disappointment. My hair is a part of me and to not have it would be out of character for myself and seemingly only following a trend that many of those cutting all of their hair will soon regret. More power to those that do thought. What can I say *kanye shrugs* “it just aint for all folk”

I’ve done it twice — but when it was relaxed. I’ve since grown it out and am natural, absolutely no chemicals whatsoever, but am scared to go short and natural. I think if the texture were different I would do the short and natural, but right now I just think I wouldn’t have many styling options. Perhaps this is a blog post you’d consider — how to style natural hair when it’s not as soft, curly, or long!

I’ve cut all my hair off, worn it natural, worn weaves, dyed it a million times, and currently have a perm/weave. I think its just hair. The best part about it is that it grows back. The attention you get comes from the confidence you exude with any hair style.

I grew up in South Africa and women cutting their hair is a norm. However when I got to the US I fell under the pressure of weaves, wigs and such. My natural hair refused to grow properly no matter how much I took care of it. After about a decade I finally to not only throw out the wigs, but I shaved my hair as well. Ironically everyone I knew told me I look better without hair than 16″ locks. Which echoed what my mom always believed. This is my second summer with a buzz cut and I’ve never felt so good and sexy.

I’m “transitioning” (technically, I’ve grown out most if not all of my relaxer) so I wouldn’t see the point in doing it now.

But let me say I’ve done it twice (both times against my will, due to my hair not being able to take perms) against my will, and I was so socially traumatized by my experiences I think it would take a lot of growth and confidence on my part to do it again. The first time was when my hair fell out in 4th grade and then again in 9th grade. I might’ve gotten over it if I’d known out the time to ignore the immaturity of my peers and hadn’t been singled out so often. No matter what my family and friends said about my beauty, I was convinced I looked ugly, thinking that people who didn’t know me would sooner tell me the truth than people who loved me and just wanted to protect my feelings. Although I always admired other people who could do it and wear it with confidence. That made them beautiful to me. My best friend did it, and although she’s always had a gorgeous face, she seems to glow now (lol sounds corny).

Thankfully, I actually have great self-esteem despite a lot of childhood/adolescent experiences. I’d like to think I would cut if now, should the need present itself, but I doubt I’d commit to it as a long-term style. And I always think about how much easier managing my natural hair would be now had I patiently let it grow and avoided relaxers back then.

I cut all my hair off last summer, and I really found it so liberating. It was at a bad time in my life where I was under a lot of stress and expectations to conform, and chopping all my hair off was kind of my little silent rebellion. It was so nice to feel the breeze on my scalp, not have to worry about a ponytail when I was working out or even brushing it in the morning! A lot of women expressed their secret desire to do the same thing but were too scared. I was scared before I did it too, and overcoming that fear of being “ugly” was so empowering! I became more outspoken and outgoing socially as well. It’s true, it does make guys see you differently, and a lot treated me as if I didn’t exist because I wasn’t as traditionally femenine, but a lot of guys would also stop me on the street and say they loved it! I think guys admire any woman who has the confidence to chop all their hair off. I would reccomend it at least once in your life to every woman!

Its just hair, it will grow back, and if it doesn’t you can buy a wig or a weave. My hair was so short I couldn’t pull it down to make a bang. I’ve never been the one for hair to my booty. I actually cut all my hair off in 2008 when my mother was diagnosed with cancer and had to go through radiation treatments. I did it because I had always wanted to go natural and because I wanted to show her that losing her hair was not a big deal. I started to grow it back late last year but I am seriously considering cutting it off again. It was a really liberating feeling for me.

I have extra cash in my pocket since i don’t splurge on the best weaves and a ridiculously expensive stylist. I feel very free, and never once have i regretted shaving off all my long soft hair. When ppl say to me “OMG u cut ur hair”? I tell them, its just hair it’ll grow back and ur hair length or texture DOES NOT define beauty!

I just recently (last week of May) chopped off my hair to about an 1 inch. So yeah, similar to Solange. All in the quest to bring forth natural HEALTHY hair. Before that, I’ve been natural for about 5/6 yrs. Didn’t initially start from the beginning; I let the perm fall off. During that period, I was NOT taking good care of it. Hot oil treatment? #fail Condition? #fail Moisturize it? #fail A hot ass mess all around. This time around, I’m being a little more tender to my hair. I have been taking great care of it and it shows. My hair has been growing so much! Never have I seen it growing at this rate before. Actually, it freaks me out. But I’m loving it. I’m waiting until December to see my progress. After Dec? Who knows.

I have very long wavy/curly hair that is just about at the top of my behind. I have never used a relaxer or perms on my hair. My hair is already natural. I do plan on cutting my hair all off, shaved in the back and donate to Locks Of Love. I have cut my hair in a very short bob but never all off. I am very nervous but I look forward to it. Like many I have a very big head. But, I am looking forward to the change. I am more nervous for how often I will have to get my hair done (my hair grows very fast) and how I will look.

It is much easier to cut your hair short when you didn’t have much hair in the first place like Solange and Chrisette. It is much harder when your hair is actually long like Bre’s. More power to her. I have contemplated doing it myself (I have long, thick hair) but I just don’t have the never right now. I am sure that it is quite liberating. Can you imagine being able to get ready almost as fast as your man. Only spend 10-15 minutes on your hair? It would be heaven.

I cut it all off about two years ago, and Now im thinking about it again… but this time because of the damage. I have not put any chemicals in my hair, but I have been straightening it a lot. So Here comes another chapter.. learning how to care and nurture my beautiful curls… what I was researching is the growing process.. because I dont necessarily want to keep it short, but I want to learn how to care for it in all levels of growth. And something else I have been thinking about is the work force.. I just graduated college so now I am applying for jobs and what not. fun. :(. lol. anyway. I dont want to NOT look professional, but I am a bit upset that professional means a certain hair style.
How do care for my curly hair from short to long??
      No clue :)
