Hey Fashion Bombshells!
It’s Danielle here with another beauty breakdown.
My international magazine game is backed up. Apparently another drawback of the global recession is that international mags are slow to show up on NYC bookshelves. Or at least that’s what the clerk at Barnes & Noble told me. So while it’s nearly May, the February 2010 issue of Arise magazine just recently hit the shelves at my local bookstore. No love lost because the cover is absolutely HOT! Gracing both the cover and a multi-page editorial (on how innovative natural hair is becoming) is Somalian model Ubah Hassan. If you remember, Claire did a feature on the stunning face of Ralph Lauren last year as the model was just hitting the fashion scene.
The editorial perfectly combined bright orange lipstick with blue eye shadow against her creamy chocolate skin. Can we give a standing ovation to makeup artist Tyron Machhausen who used MAC products for the shoot?
What’s even greater is that this look works on virtually all shades of brown girl, but if you’re not a complete bright enthusiast as I am, choose either a bright on the eyes or the lips and keep the other understated.
But if you’re all in for the explosion of color, read on for my guestimates of the makeup used.
All products mentioned are by MAC.
1. As always, beautiful makeup starts with beautiful skin. Cleanse, tone, and moisturize your skin according to your skin type.
2. Since we’re using dark eyeshadow colors with a potential for shadow fallout, we’re going to do eyes first before foundation. So to prep your eyes for eyeshadow and to make sure it lasts all day, apply Paint all over the lid up to the brow bone in a shade closest to your skin tone using your index finger. Apply Soft Brown Eyeshadow on the brow bone using 224 Brush. Lighter skin try Eyeshadows in Orb, Vanilla, or Malt (the idea for all tones is to use a shade one to two shades lighter than your skin tone).

Apply Eyeshadow in Nehru all over the bottom lid and in the crease with 217 Brush. Be sure to blend carefully especially where Nehru meets the brow bone shade (careful not to muddy the colors by overblending). Using Nehru again, take 275 Brush and wing it outside the corner of the eyes. You can use the edge of a business card to help guide you.
Take 219 Brush and line the inner corners of the eyes as well as underneath the waterline with Freshwater eyeshadow. Use 219 Brush and with Nehru line the outer corners of the eye as well as the 3/4 of the bottom of the waterline.
Finish with two to three coats of Studio Fix Lash Mascara.
3. For picture perfect skin, apply Prep & Prime Face foundation primer followed by Studio Tech Foundation using 190 Brush. Prep & Prime works to smooth over the skin’s texture and minimize the appearance of pores while Studio Tech provides smooth medium to full cover making it perfect for taking pictures (often SPF displays an ashen appearance once it gets hit by the camera’s flash), but if you plan on wearing it outdoors for a prolonged period of time, be sure that your moisturizer has you covered for sun exposure. Set with Select Sheer Loose Powder using 187 Brush and for touch-ups throughout the day that won’t interfere with your makeup, carry Blot Powder Pressed in your purse.
4. For the cheeks, take 168 Brush and apply Raizin blush to the apples of the cheeks and extend towards the temples. Lightly dust Select Sheer Loose Powder over Raizin to set.
5. Smooth over dry, flaky lips with Prep & Prime Lip. Apply Lipstick in Morange using 242 Brush.
6. Apply another light dusting of Select Sheer Loose Powder and add a few spritzes of Fix+ Spray.

OMG! I picked up this magazine over the weekend and I was absolutely in awe of the makeup, styling and stories. I was totally inspired to use some of the concepts.

Just thought I’d say the proper term is “Somali” (as was used in Ubah’s spotlight) not “Somalian”.
