It’s no secret–we sure tend to spend a lot of money on our hair. From twists to weaves to relaxers, it can cost a pretty penny to keep our hair looking fly on the regular. But now that the value of the USD is probably less than a food stamp, has your hair suffered? Do you still make your weekly pilgrimage to your hair salon or have you downsized and opted for a low-budget alternative? Share your hair stories in the comments!

Well since I’m natural I can’t just run to the doobie spot for $8….so I paid close attention @ the hairdresser and just replicate for everyday…if I have somewhere special to go I’ll splurge on the $100+ salon visit

No. I go every two weeks. Right now I happen to be rockin’ a weave so visits are less frequent, otherwise I would be right in that chair. I’m just not one to do my own hair. It never turns out right.

Since I’ve gone natural, I only go to get my hair styles for special occasions. I shampoo, condition and style my hair myself weekly. So, I’m saving more money now than when I was relaxed.

Definitely saving more money now after going natural. Instead of going to the salon every two weeks I am doing everything myself….putting more money in my pocket so I can spend on other things more important to me like shoes! lol

My hairs been natural my entire life. Mom forbid perms, than everyone told me not to get one anyway. Typically, i’ll go to the Dominican salon every 2-3 weeks for a wash, set, and blow dry ($23-30). If your not up on them, give it a try if your natural or if you have a perm and the situation is rough but it’s too early for a touch up, find them in your area by searching google. If you think your hair is too course or thick for them, think again. Ask who does hair like yours or go directly to the hairdresser with hair like yours, there’s bound to be one.
In between, i’ll do my own hair, either wear it natural or straighten it myself. Then i’ll get lazy and go back to the salon.

I chopped off my perm a few years ago and rocked braids until 6 months ago. Did the press and curl thing for a minute, and then one day while shampooing, feel in love with my curls. Been workin on my natural look and it saves me TONS of money. Going from $70+ every 1.5 weeks, to $30 for 2 months worth of hair care products is a great recession buster for my hair. Plus, my lovely curls stay happier and less damaged.
p.s. no offense to the perm, p&c, or weavy divas. Do what you do! :)

I’ve managed to work out a deal with my hairdresser. If I help her out with her portfolio, I can get my hair done for free. It’s a collaborative effort that way I know my hair won’t be to crazy :).

I really find it funny that you asked this question. I was asking about this last year, when I decided to leave my job and finish school. At that time, I decided to go natural. Not that it was a serious, concious, decision, it was just that I was trying to save my family some money. I have been natural for almost a year and I love my hair! I think that the economy definitely had something to do with me making the decision, however, going natural was the best decision I made! My hair thanks me for it everyday! ;-)

Nope im natural so I treat my hair at home everyweek but I am about to shell out $100 to get my hair braided to give this Afro Kink a break lol.

I’m in the process of going natural (it’s been close to a year since I last got a relaxer) but I still make my way to the hairdresser religiously every week. My hair is long and thick and takes way too much effort to even attempt to do it myself.
Can anyone recommend any good products for natural hair, I’m still learning the ropes, lol. Thx!!

I continue to get my hair done weekly, but I do my own manicures and pedicures so it balances out.

Aye,
Websites like Curlynikki.com are really good sources…I use You Tube a lot they show you styles, product reviews and even natural hair support.

i am natural, but often wear weaves that i do myself. sew in’s no glue. and i actually learned how to do sew ins from youtube. life saver. they give me ideas and help with techniques… i dont know if i would have gone natural or know how to style it when i wear it natural if it were not for youtube!…Also, shop around. I have heard stylists charging as little as $70 for a sew in weave and as much as $350, for the same technique.

I have relaxed hair but lately i’ve gone from every 2 weeks to now every 3 weeks. But ideally my hair needs to be washed and set after 1 week but the funds are really low if existent at all, cuz im a non working grad student. In any case, it allows me to stretch the funds. I’ve tried doing my hair in college and it take a lot more work and lacks the salon touch. SO all in all the money being spent is worth it.

I changed hair stylists. Every 8 weeks I was paying $100 and now I pay $50 so I save a lot by going back to the dominican salon. Its the same person I used for years when my hair was longer and heathly so I think its better anyway.

I have to say that I’m almost surprised to see so many lovely naturals out there. Good stuff :)
March 4, 2010 6:26 pm
Yes, yes. I make the same. But you know once you get a weave, your hair kind of gets dependent on them and remi velvet $50/pack, plus 130 what the stylist charge. Its adds up. But I am with most of you, when it’s natural it’s less. Just that you be coming out the club looking well let’s just say not so sleek.

Well I’m currently in the process of deciding what I’m going to do w my hair. I’m currently wearing a short quick weave. It protects my hair from the wool coats and hats in the winter. It lasts for a month and looks great low maintenance and all that but I’m getting tired of it and will be back at the Dominican salon Saturday! I’ve been inspired to cut my hair short after seeing so many cute, funky razored pixie do’ and I’ve always want to cut it but I’ve heard that short haircuts are very high maintenance.

umm my hair is not affected by the economy . I get my hair done every 2 weeks . Asking me to do my own hair is a recipe for disaster
March 6, 2010 10:55 am
When the economy was stronger, I definately was the first in line to get my hair done every two weeks. I was thinking more about my hair than my bank account. But now I do my hair on my own and get a texturizer from the Dominican Beauty Salon every three months ($105). I never use to do my own hair, so at first, I was not very good at it, but practice makes perfect. I also look at youtube videos to get tips and new ideas.
