OK, Now What? Jezebel Finds Fewer Models of Color on the Runway

    by Claire

Every season, website Jezebel.com does a remarkably thorough report on the diversity (or lack thereof) on the runway:

This year the numbers came in–and they weren’t very encouraging. The article states, “Of 4,095 turns on the runway, only 662 went to models who weren’t white. That’s barely 16%. Black models, at 323 bookings, were used the most of any single ethnic group, aside from whites. Asians were second, with 264. Latinas were a distant third, with 61 trips down the catwalk. Fourteen times during this fashion week, models of other races were used in a runway show.” The article goes on to state that the United States is 75% white, and that shows should therefore reflect true American demographics.

The issue of diversity in fashion has been a hot topic for years now, starting with Bethann Hardison’s “Absence of Color” talks back in 2008. The fact that fashion can be exclusionary, elitist, and dare I say racist is no secret. The real question is: what do we do about it?

The idea of boycotting a line that doesn’t use models of color is appealing, but unrealistic. Apparently the Max Azrias, the forces behind Hervé Leger, BCBG, and Max Azria, were some of the main perpetrators of the ‘no color’ policy.  But to think that you’ll pass up that hot BCBG frock just because the runway show didn’t feature a diverse cast seems silly. If you can do it, bravo.

I think the true solution is to simply get more people of color working behind the scenes. Casting directors clearly don’t prioritize having a multiracial cast of models, and no amount of complaining or discussion can make them change the way they conduct business.  Sure, the initial fury over the lack of color resulted in a few one offs, including the all black Italian Vogue, but if we want a systematic change, it must be done from the inside.

If the recent rise of bloggers has taught me anything, it’s that fashion will recognize hard work and talent, regardless of the package it comes in. I’m challenging all of you who want to work in fashion to take on those unpaid internships, do the best job you can, sacrifice, and start to diversify the industry yourselves.  Or be like Bethann and start your own modeling agency that recognizes true talent and makes the connections needed to make sure runways reflect reality.

    What do you think?

Read the full article on this year’s runways at Jezebel.com.

Black History Beauty Trend: Gelled and Slicked Down Baby Hair

    by Danielle

    Greetings, Fashion Bombers!

Danielle here again bringing you back down Black History Beauty memory lane. Today’s flashback is brought to you by a Goody fishtail comb, an old toothbrush, and a 40 ounce jar of Let’s Jam.

Darlings, the origins of slicking down one’s “baby hair” (the tiny halo of hairs around the hairline) can rightly be debated, but if you ask me I say the trend began with one regal and royal family–The First Family, if you will, of Music—The Jacksons. Now while Michael gave us fever with his slicked down tendrils in the 80s and beyond, I say the trend really started with The Queen Bee, LaToya. Check her out in this pic dated from sometime in the early to mid 70s:

    LaToya’s baby hairs were EPIC!

Did you catch her in the corner with the red giving face and hair? Even big sis Reebie on the far left got a little baby hurr action going on.

As time went on, we became even more creative (like we do with all things) with baby hairs opting for more elaborate designs. Who can remember the little fishtail (or comma) design you did with your sideburns? *raises hand and hang head down in shame*

And remember how Chilli from TLC was the unofficial spokesperson for baby hairs?

And R&B singer Ginuwine for the guys? (Thankfully, I never dated a dude with baby hairs—I was too worried about possible breakouts on my cheeks from the contact friction–and um, too worried about him stealing my shoes).

P.S. Did you know Ginuwine’s government name is Elgin Baylor Lumpkin? I kid you not!

This trend also started to leak into other cultures. Many of my Latina friends back in the day had crazy baby hair designs, too.

Nowadays we all now how bad gel dries out and then breaks off our hair, but that doesn’t stop celebs like Lil’ Kim from rocking the wet look. I also believe you can get lace front wigs with built-in baby hairs. How innovative.

Now ladies (and gents) I want to hear YOUR baby hair memories. Hit me up in the comments.

But if you use the term “good hair” anywhere in your comment, I’m coming for you!

Leona Lewis and Naomi Campbell in Alexander McQueen for the Elle UK Style Awards

    by Claire

Leona Lewis and Naomi Campbell paid tribute to the late designer Alexander McQueen, wearing dresses from his Pre-Fall 2009 and Spring 2010 collection to the Elle UK Style Awards:
Leona looked lovely in a black keyhole dress, nude pumps, and fingerless gloves, and Naomi rocked the stuff out of a lizard print mini dress and platform black pumps. I think they both celebrated McQueen’s legacy beautifully.

    Do you?

London Fashion Week Wrap Up: The Mulberry Party with Alexa Chung

    by Claire

    Hey Guys!
So London was a lot of fun! My friends and I shopped, dipped into a few fashion shows, then ended our fabulous circuit with the hottest event in town: The Mulberry party cohosted by Alexa Chung and Emma Hill.

The super exclusive fete was held at the Orangery at Kensington Palace. At 10pm a line of fashionable people gathered at the gate and guards told everyone that the party was at capacity and wasn’t worth the wait. Undeterred, my friends and I decided to stick it out and  eventually sashayed in…

We were instantly dazzled by a fashionable tent and ballroom where waiters passed out yummy margaritas and puff pastries.

We hit the floor and danced to tunes by Michael Jackson,  Lady Gaga, and the house band Delphic. I eventually spied Alexa Chung, who snapped a quick pic:
She was nice enough, and seemed sweet.
After, my friends and I toasted to the end of a fab London Fashion Week:
We were posing by some glitter tigers, but were given specific instructions not to photograph them. I think the glitter curtain did us justice:)

At any rate, I had an amazing time.

London was short, but sweet, and I’m definitely going to keep going each season. I met and saw tons of bloggers as well; do I smell a new fashion week trend? I hope so.
    Smootches!

Try This: OPI Axxium Gel Manicure

    by Danielle

    Hello fine folks!

Danielle here giving you the 411 on a hot new nail trend.

So as you know, one of my beauty New Year’s Resolutions this year was to always have a manicure. I have dozens of nail polishes so this couldn’t be that hard. But then we all know how quickly nail polish chips. Even my favorite OPI for Sephora winds up chipping after about 4 days and with a crazy schedule like mine, I don’t always have the time to remove the chips and redo. I was in need of something groundbreaking.

Back in January I explained to the fine folks at the salon I’ve been going to for years, that I had resolved to have a standing manicure appointment every week. But my manicurist explained she could do me one better and talked me into getting OPI Axxium Gel Manicure, a manicure to the tenth power!

Instead of regular nail polish, OPI Axxium Gel Manicure uses a substance that I could only describe as colored gel that is brushed on your nails and then hardened under a UV lamp. My manicurist explained that the gel would last like 2 weeks without chipping or smudging. I was sold–but worried it would cost me like $50 (I’m not playing with my budget this year)–I breathed the hugest sigh of relief when she told me it was just $28. Yes, $28 is still a bit steep considering a regular manicure is around $10-$12 but how many times have you gotten a regular manicure and felt cheated when only 2 days later your nails look shot? Exactly. Plus, you would have to go in for a manicure every week. I’ve had the gel manicure done three times since and the longest lasted me a little more than two weeks.

The procedure takes about 45 minutes. Your nails will be filed, clipped, and buffed like they normally would with a manicure, but then the magic comes. First a coat of a clear OPI Axxium base was applied to my nails. After each coat, my hands would sit under a UV lamp device. After the clear coat dried, then came my base coat. Unfortunately for now, OPI Axxium doesn’t come in the full range of colors like their regular line. The colors they do have come in a good range though. I chose OPI’s Lincoln Park After Dark and then Russian Navy because I love dark, vampy colors for fall/winter. It didn’t take very long for my nails to dry and when it came time for me to dig in my bag for my wallet to pay—not a single smudge. Perfection. Though not as decorative as Claire’s Wah Nails, you still get a long lasting manicure.

When it’s time to take them off, you go back to your manicurist who will buff your nails a bit, apply some remover, and then wrap your nails with foil until the remaining gel slides off. Your nails will not suffer like they would with acrylics.

If you’re in the Queens area and want to try this out, call and make an appointment at the Aveda Natural Look Salon in Queens Center Mall (where I get my brows threaded to the gods by Rajni). I hear this same procedure is $40 and up in Manhattan salons so bring some extra change with you if you’re city-bound. This procedure is offered at many salons nationwide (and perhaps worldwide), so inquire with your manicurist.

What do you think of the gel manicure? What do you get done at the nail salon? Tell me in the comments!

Black History Fashion Trend : Shiny Suits

    by Claire

In addition to his business and music production skills, Diddy has always been well regarded for his sartorial choices:

In the late 1990′s, he was able to communicate a flashier, bolder sense of style with the help of stylists like June Ambrose and musical director Hype Williams. One of his main contributions to urban fashion history would have to be the Shiny Suit:

Made out of PVC, the aviator inspired style made its debut in the 1997 hit “Mo Money Mo Problems,” where Diddy and his right hand man at the time, Mase, wore the suit in a myriad of colors, including red, silver, yellow, and green:

The vibrant hues were in line with hip-hop’s predilection for statement pieces. Thankfully Diddy eventually left the shiny suits behind to focus on building his empire, including his Sean Jean line of clothing:

Among other things, Diddy will always be credited in the anals of urban history for spearheading a movement where men could flaunt their eccentricity in multicolored bright suits accented with Marc Jacobs Goggles.
Guys, did you jump onto the shiny suit trend?

Vuitton’s Life: The Kardashians for Bebe and Brian Reyes!

    by Claire

    Hey Guys!

Vuitton here with a rundown of a few of the fabulous shows I attended during New York Fashion Week!
My bestie Lavonne and I were excited for the Kardashians for Bebe show. We got there a little late, but thankfully, shows in New York don’t seem to start on time. We got to our seats and waited to see what the Kardashians had to offer.

The line was everything expected of a Kardashian bombshell. Curve-hugging dresses, leggings and boyfriend blazers were the staples of the collection.

Groundbreaking? Not really. But the reality star sisters stayed true to their personal style without veering far from what’s relatable and trendy.

Kim was there, sans her sisters to rep for the line wearing one of their creations.

Fatima from America’s Next Top Model walked in the show and showed us a bit of her quirky side.

And Fatima and Mr. Jay had a bit of a reunion after the show…

Kim Kardashian left as quickly as she came, but Adrienne Ballon stuck around and was gracious enough to take a pic with me!

What’d you guys think of the collection?

Next, we ran to Brian Reyes:

Once again, gray was a very popular color this season, but Reyes played with the shade in a way that sparked interest.  He patterned a few of his pieces after decaying tree bark, but ironically, it brought the collection to life.

He also hopped on board with the deliciously pumpkin colored pieces he sent down the runway.  Very Gossip Girl chic, especially with the knee-highs and platforms.

Reyes also took a classic fabric like jacquard and transformed it into silhouettes with modern touches like the midriff skimming look on the right.  It was a little risque, but it still maintains that classic appeal.

There were also some luxurious fur pieces sent down the runway in the richest shade of navy blue I’ve ever seen.

One thing to be admired about this collection was the use of prints and colors, an area in which most designers fall short.  Reyes’ inspiration will be sure to transcend the runway into the closets of fashionistas who want to keep a current wardrobe without coming off as gaudy.

Celebrity stylist du jour, June Ambrose, was tweeting her fingers away on the front row, keeping her fans abreast of all the chai tea hauteness that spilled on Reyes’ runway.  At the end of the show, I asked her for a pic, and she was more than generous to take one with me!

She was stunned when I told her my name to which she replied, “Wait.  That’s your government name?  Haute pepper approved daaahling!“  She was definitely a breath of fresh air and has the most infectious personality one can come across.  Check out her YouTube page here for styling tips and side-splitting commentary.

    What do you think?

    ~Vuitton
