Hey Guys!
Happy Monday!
As you know, February is Black History Month, and every year we try to bring you the best knowledge about African-Americans in Fashion!
When we first started, we offered history on black designers known and unknown, and last year we blitzed you with a bevy of fun black history facts (read our section here).
This year, we’re going to take a look at beauty and fashion trends born in the black community.
Our first trend: Bamboo Door Knocker Earrings:

Salt N Pepa, New York City 1987
Starting in the mid 1980′s female rappers like Salt-N-Pepa, MC Lyte, and Roxanne Shanté popularized large, gold, bamboo door knocker earrings.

Roxanne Shante, Roxanne’s Revenge 1984
Scores of women incorporated the trend into their lifestyle, so much so that in his song “Around the Way Girl,” rapper LL Cool J rhymed, “I need a girl with extensions in her hair, bamboo earrings, at least two pair.”

In recent years, young starlets such as Meagan Good, Rihanna, and Keri Hilson have reinvigorated the trend, rocking the style in many designs and shapes.

You can now find mainstream designers such as Kenneth Jay Lane and John Hardy selling hip-hop inspired bamboo earrings in Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus:
Have you ever rocked Bamboo Earrings?
Stay tuned for more Black History Month fashion and beauty fun!
Until then, check out these 80′s videos and reminisce:

Around the Way Girl – my favourite ’90s tune. My cousins and I would dance along with the dance routines, and always rocked our bamboos! Lol @ LL: “i like reg-a-la girls”. Lol. Thanks for the trip down Memory Lane.

Thanks for the post, Claire. And yes, I STILL rock my gold oversized bamboo earrings, they are one of my favorite accessories. They always add some “street’ to my outfit without looking ridiculous. It’s true, not many women can pull off the look, but my friends love my earrings on me :)

Man, y’all are killing me with the 90s flava! I did a post on Salt N Pepa and the asymmetrical cuts, for my At One Point This Was In Style section. Salt N Pepa used to kill the fashion game! And big ups to LL for being the man back in the day!

Dear ‘Anonymous’ University of Virgina student: What are you talking about? Is there some sort of ‘hold’ on reporting fashion history? We’ve actually written about this before, in 2008 (google it), but resurrected it again for black history month.
And I guess we also steal our Fashion Bombshell of the Day features, Style Inspirations, and pictures of Real Style? People please.

the best deal for door knockers is at your local beauty supply not sallys but the korean kind they are huge and for only a dolla or two and they have real looking bangle in silver and gold (sic.fake), but cover with a little clear nail polish and you are good to go plus they are lighter on the lobes.

Oh wow yo, I feel soo old remembering my bamboo earrings! And I did have many pairs, circle and square. I can still see me and my cousins, rocking out the oversize t-shirts and those salt-n-peppa pants (what we now call “leggings”)!! You could not tell us we did not look fly!
