Beauty Hot! or Hmm…: 41st NAACP Image Awards

    by Danielle

Hello my sweets! Danielle here giving you the beauty scoop at the 41st NAACP Image Awards. Black America’s finest came out to celebrate, but did they all look the part? We’ll find out…

This one’s image heavy with a lot of looks to cover so we must work quickly, darlings. This is not a drill. Let’s go!

Winner of the Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture, actress and comedian Mo’Nique looked gorgeous even in this backstage portrait picture with so-so lighting. An up-do, strapless dress, and a Sam Fine beat face suits the Precious star well. I can’t wait to see her look when she picks up her Oscar. Hot!

Super cute and bubbly Keke Palmer gave “girl next door” with her natural yet radiant makeup look. And just how sweet (and crazy) was her acceptance speech when she won the Image Award for Best Performance in a Youth/Children’s Program? Hot!

I love how all the women who are 40 and up are KILLING the game for the rest of us. And Ms. Toni Braxton is no exception. She looked sexy and flirty even with a shaved hair-do that was popular in 2009. Hot!

I’m always on the fence when it comes to Tatyana Ali. I thought she was one of the prettiest things on TV when I was a pre-teen/teenager watching her on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Nowadays—hmmm…I mean, she’s a pretty girl, but I always feel like something’s missing. Though her skin looks great, the side bun and touch of baby hair is just not rocking my world.

I want Taraji P. Henson to be my BFF because she seems like a ton of fun. I thought she looked pretty here, but felt she could have used some Sam Fine (or Damone Roberts) brows and some better lashes (I’m sure Eyelash Guru to the Stars Jamal Buster has something fierce).

Sherri Shepherd‘s hair (ok…her wig) looked on point Friday night! It gave bounce and curl and waves, darling. Her makeup was ok, but I would recommend a stronger eyeshadow primer to keep her eye makeup more intact.

*Sigh.* This is what it looks like when bad wigs happen to good people. Dammit, Shaun Robinson—you are too pretty for this. Double Hmm…

The NAACP Image Awards recognizes talents of all colors and races and Disney star Selena Gomez was one of them. The soon-to-be 18 year old looked beautiful, of course, but I wish she would have taken more of a chance with her makeup. You’re young, have fun!

Lincoln Heights star Rhyon Brown was spotted in a chartreuse gown with matching eyeshadow. While this is so something someone Rhyon’s age (17) would do, I feel there are far too many color options out there to match your shadow to your dress. I urge Rhyon to grab a color wheel (ok, and some oil blotting papers) and take more chances. Cute girl nonetheless.

I love me some Raven-Symone, but the really soft colors in her dress and the equally soft ones in her makeup are making me want to run by her with a can of brightly-colored paint! She looks washed out which is unfortunate because she has such a bright personality. Hmm…

Paula Patton got it right with the blush! Looking HOT, Miss Rain.

House of Payne star and former Cosby kid Keshia Knight Pulliam kicked up her neutral-toned makeup look with a bright cheek color that looks like my NARS favorite Exhibit A. And her hair was properly laid. Hot!

While I love singer Keri Hilson‘s eye makeup, I am not feeling this raven-hued hairdo. The color over-powers her golden undertones and the curls take over her tiny face. Hmm…

Vampire Diaries star Katerina Graham proves that vampires do truly live forever with this 1940s housewife-approved hairdo. I obviously hate the hair, but the makeup is gorgeous and she gets another pass for her dress (shown below).

Jill Scott belted out a powerful performance during a tribute to Haitian-American Activist and Entertainer Wyclef Jean with this Alicia Keys-esque hairdo and smoky eye. Though those braids look frighteningly tight, Jilly from Philly looks fab.

Red carpet cutie Gabrielle Union paid tribute to Farrah Fawcett (and 2002) with this feathered and flipped ‘do. The color looks great on her chocolately skin, but a third resurgence of this hair get her a Hmm…

Image Award winner for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture, Gabourey Sidibe brought tears to my eyes with her heart-warming acceptance speech. Gabby is youthful and bubbly, so I’m not quite sure why they have her in this tossed-aside hair and dull makeup. Being an Academy Award nominee and Image Award Winner should grant her access to the Tina Knowles House of Wigs and a better selection of blush colors, right? Hmm…

Top Model winner and actress Eva Marcille simply has on too much makeup. Someone please grab some makeup wipes and an airbrush gun STAT. Hmm…

Cicely Tyson is a living legend and I refuse to say anything bad about her so I’ll just whistle…

The Princess and the Frog star Anika Noni Rose looked beautiful of course, but her high half-up, half-down Beyonce-approved hair do and makeup screamed pageant moreso than red carpet. Hmm…

Hit FOX show Glee‘s Amber Riley also hit the Image Awards. Her side ponytail filled with bump-a-curls reminded me of the fifth grade as well as her paint-by-number eyeshadow/outfit matching look. Hmm…

And last we have actress Tracy Higgins and—is this a smoothed-out version of finger waves? Or who had a short-do in the 90s and remembers when their hairstylist wrapped your hair like this and stuck you under the dryer? But then the hair was combed out and styled after that, not left that way. Hmm…

Did you watch the Image Awards? What were some of your favorite highlights and what did you think of the red carpet beauty?

    ~Danielle

Product Review: Pantene Relaxed and Natural

    by Claire

    Hey Guys!
So Pantene was kind enough to send me over samples of their Relaxed and Natural for Women of Color Hair Care Line, and of course I had to try it out! All this month, I’ll be offering you guys quick reviews of my fave products from the line. First up, their Daily Oil Cream and Moisturizer:

What’s not to love? This creamy concoction of Glycerin, Mineral, and Coconut Oils keeps my hair bouncy during the dry winter months. I’ve used it day and night without fail, and it gives my hair the moisture that it needs (when the heat in my super toasty apartment takes it away). Bonus, it never makes my locks feel super oily or weighed down. It’s the bomb!
Get yours for only $5 at drugstores or purchase here.

Stay tuned for more product reviews next week!

Vogue Italia Says Black Beauties Deserve Their Own Spotlight

    by Claire

Vogue Italia recently wrote a blog defending their decision to launch black stylista focused site, Vogue Black. They said, “Finally, two years on from the publication of A Black Issue, surrounded by Eastern European models, we ask ourselves: how long will it take before we see more black beauties on the runway? As summarized by Afrobella in her blog,  they deserve their own spotlight.”

I have no problem with Vogue Black’s site, but comments on our Facebook page reveal Fashion Bombers do!  Reader Mary said, “That’s cool and all but why does it have to be Vogue Black..why can’t Vogue just acknowledge black and keep it pushing!! Accept us for what we are don’t categorize!” Barbara added, ” Why does Vogue need a Black section and a separate Editor-at-Large simply for the Black section? Why aren’t the Black models good enough to be integrated in the main magazine and on the main cover..?”

I can see how many of you view this as an empty victory. Industries are strongest when integrated, and this separation underscores our systematic exclusion and lets mainstream magazines off the diversity hook. Still, I applaud Vogue for acknowledging the legions of stylish black women and men who love fashion but can’t find themselves in most magazines. We can kind of think of Vogue Black as a renewed Suede, this time around with amazing resources and established relationships with industry greats like Steven Meisel and Naomi Campbell.

    What do you think?

Video Fun : Rihanna’s Rude Boy

    by Claire

So I was getting down on a yummy cheeseburger at my local diner when Rihanna’s video for Rude Boy came on TV. Though the burger was bangin, I had to put it down for a second to take in the fun visuals:

I loved the neon colors, Rihanna’s sexy swagger, and the song! Finally Rihanna has a post-Umbrella hit that matches her outfits in hotness.

I also appreciated the viddy’s Caribbean feel. Rihanna started with ‘Pon de Replay, then went to Disturbia, and now she’s somewhere in between. I love it.
As soon as I got home I downloaded Rude Boy from Itunes. It’s currently on permapeat (that’s how I gets down).
What do you think of the video. Do you love?

Get the Look : Angela Simmons’ Schoolgirl Outfit

    by Claire

Zimzim was cruising over at the YBF and saw a pic of Angela Simmons wearing a saucy schoolgirl inspired outfit. She says, “I really love the corset top Angela Simmons has on. Can you tell me where I can get something similar in the US or UK?” We’ll do you one better and find you the whole outfit:

Throw a crested blazer over a corset top, and rock a mini A-line skirt with lace up platform boots. Complete with a pair of oversized shades and thin gold stacked bracelets:

Angela better work! She is certainly upping her chic quotient. What do you think?

Black History Fashion Trend: Sagging Pants

    by Claire

Guys, we’ve all heard it before.  From parents, grandparents, teachers, and aunts and uncles.  “Pull up your pants!”

Sagging, which originated in US prisons due to oversized uniforms and the banning of belts to prevent suicide and other violent acts, somehow parlayed itself into mainstream attire.  Catapulted by hip-hop artists in the 90′s, it set the stage for both a cultural and fashion movement.

A few lawmakers weren’t too keen on the idea.  Since 2007, in a few states, sagging was placed under their indecent exposure ordinances and was cited as a violation of some schools’ dress codes.

While most of us can agree that the colors and patterns of your underwear should be kept private, isn’t fashion supposed to be an expression of what we think and how we feel through what we wear?  This slightly frivolous debate is indeed a Catch 22, as there are more grave dilemmas to distress over in this world.  Sagging definitely isn’t one of them.

And for those of you with inquiring minds, here’s a little how-to on how to sag your pants.

What’s your take on the topic?

Mail Bombs: Beyonce’s Balmain Camouflage Pants, Corinne Bailey Rae’s Red Carpet Look, and Chic Graduation Dresses!

    by Claire

Lots going on here in Paris, but I always make time for our Friday Mail Bombs:)
    Let’s go!
First up Joelle says, “I was over at Necole Bitchie and saw this pic of Bey sitting courtside.”

“While her whole outfit is cute, I LOVE her pants. Who makes them?”
Beyonce is fitted in head to toe Balmain, including these $1,745 stretch cotton pants:

If that’s too much, don’t despair! Forever 21 has a similar pant for $25. Get the whole look here:

Lluckie says, “I absolutely love the boots and bag Angela Simmons is rockin !”

“Where and how can I get them?”
It’s obvious from the monogram and colors that Angela is rocking a Louis Vuitton bag from the brand’s Spring 2010 collection:

As for the shoes, get the look with these options:

Find retail locations for the bag at www.louisvuitton.com.
Next, Monique says, “I loved Corinne Bailey Rae’s outfit from the Elle Style Awards.”

“I’d love to wear something similar for a date with my boo. Help!”
Get Corinne’s essence by slipping on a pair of satin cropped pants, a button down black top, and fun black pumps. This look works for anything from a girl’s night out to a stylish red carpet. Splurge or save with the options below:

In a wardrobe query, Mallori says, “I need your help finding a graduation dress that makes a statement with elegance and class. I’m graduating from Dental school and will be receiving my D.M.D. As graduation approaches I am on the hunt for different cocktail dresses for various banquets and receptions I will be attending. Although it’s expensive, this is the dress I fell in love with but…..its no longer available in my size.”

“I call my style “modest chic” so I like to leave something to the imagination which is why I absolutely loved this dress! Seems like everything I see is short short or shows a lot of skin which is not my style. Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated! “
Since you liked the one shoulder style, I found you a host of modest yet chic dresses with a similar silhouette and in a myriad of colors:

Lastly, Briana says, “I’m headed to Florida in a little over a week, but since it’s February I’m not sure what to wear. Could you possibly give me some ideas on pieces or outfits I could or should wear?”
A quick check to weather.com reveals the temperature in Miami is about 20 degrees Celsius and 68 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s not terribly cold, but not terribly hot either, so I’d go for a few dresses with twill jackets thrown over, jeans and t’s to battle nighttime chills, and a few cute tote bags and sensible pumps:

That does it for now! I got a late start with Mail Bombs, but will update throughout the day if I stumble upon any more celebrity finds or wardrobe solutions!
    Smootches!

    by Claire

So the Vogue Black news keeps on rolling in!

Essence.com reports that Bethann Hardison, leader of the “Absence of Color” talks of yore, will be named Editor-at-Large of new Italian Vogue launch, Vogue Black:
