Thanks for the shout-out, Claire! I am so glad to see this post! At last, some recognition that you don't have to be asian to pull of the fan. Something to add: paper fans are awesome and cheap, but if you want to splurge a little, go for lace or cloth with wooden slats. It will endure the constant flip-open/flip-closed action, and it allows you to do that badass snap-open motion that you see in the asian movies.
